Well I got slicks for my bike today, I've doubled march's miles in april already, and I lost three more pounds.

Max: 304
Now: 275
bikenut? definately

Ritz 04-06-05 06:23 AM

Keep it up everyone! WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM

Zin 04-07-05 12:01 PM

I rolled over 1100 miles for the year yesterday. Still no weight loss. I've tried less calories, more calories, Low Carb, balanced diet, and have returned to my diabetic diet. Still rock solid, if not inching up a skoash. Very discouraging.

Short of fasting and only eating when I'm going to be on the bike, I'm at a loss. Guess I'll just ride my bike and let the weight do what its going to do. Its driving me nuts.

Ritz 04-07-05 01:52 PM

C'Mon Z! Don't get all gloom and doom. Look at how much healthier you are today than you used to be! :) Even if you never lose another pound... don't you feel better? Sorry, I am the eternal optimist. WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM 262 pounds and fallin'!

GradStudent 04-08-05 05:55 AM

N7CZinMT,

Are you sure you still need to lose weight? I remember the before/after photos you posted a while back (the "2000 mile effect") and you looked quite trim in the after photo!!

-GradStudent

P.S. CONGRATS on hitting 1100 miles already. That's impressive!

Hey Ritz, I don't mean to be, "all gloom and doom." I do have emotional peaks and valleys. I think the ride I did this weekend with BowWow from bikejournal has me doubting my perceived progress. He walked away from me on even the smallest of hills. Not to mention getting to see myself in riding position in his photos.

Howdy G.S. Yep. I'm sure I still need to loose weight. My doctor tells me so. The photo evidence also makes it very clear. I'm not trying to become the next Mike Magnuson, but I do want to look good as well as feel good on the bike.

I'm not giving up. Just venting some frustration to hopefully free it from my mind so I may better re-focus my efforts. I'm still enjoying being out on my bike. That won't change.

How can you not love riding through such incredible scenery? :)

Just out of curiosity have you checked your body fat percentage? It's possible that even though your weight isn't going down your body fat is. Just a thought.

TheAnalogKid 04-08-05 11:38 AM

I commuted once last week, and twice this week.

2 pounds lost!!!

(I know it is not a lot, but I am just beginning to commute)

recursive 04-08-05 02:00 PM

That's 10 ounces of body weight lost per commute. That's huge! (assuming it's not just water weight)

Ritz 04-08-05 07:24 PM

Hey Z, I hope I didn't come off sounding like I was slaming you. I guess my encouragement skills need more polishing. At 262 rather fluffy pounds, I can only hope to be in your shape one day! :) Keep up the good work, whether you know it or not you are a real inspiration! Ritz.

Zin 04-11-05 03:51 PM

Hey Ritz, no problem. I didn't take it in a bad way. Besides, perhaps I need a kick in the back-side..LOL

Ritz 04-12-05 07:52 AM

This Saturday and Sunday I'll be doing my first MS 150. It's 185 miles over two days from Houston to Austin. Day one is about 100 miles and will be my first true century. I've done metric centuries twice but as everyone knows, 62 miles is not 100 miles. The next day is 85 miles and mostly hills... I covet your prayers. If you're not the prayin' sort, just keep me in your thoughts. This may be just what I need to shake up my metabolism, and get off the 262 pound mark. :) WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM

Good luck man! I'll be prayin' for ya! I want to do a century this summer also. I know you can do it!

Zin 04-12-05 08:13 PM

Ritz!

You have the base miles in. The century is nothing to fear. You will do fine. Just take your time and have fun. :D

Zin

EDIT:I did my first SOLO century in March. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be going solo.

Ritz 04-13-05 05:00 AM

Thank you both very much! I guess Man will always tremble at the unknown. Everyone tells me I'll have a blast, and I've no reason to doubt them. :D Thanks again, I'll let y'all know how it went on my site. HTTP://WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM

Bandusa 04-14-05 02:47 PM

Last May I weighed 275 lbs. I rode all summer about 200 miles a week and did two centuries and an MS-150. I now weigh 217, broke that stubborn 220 barrier. I am 5' 11" and wnat to bet at 190 0r 185. I know I am riding faster these days, but cannot get the wieght to go. After an intense winter of weight training my body composition has changed, but how do you kick off those pounds in the stomach mostly. Oh yeah changed my diet a great deal sinc elast May. I want to race and come in reasonable well.

Bandusa 04-14-05 02:49 PM

Ritz,

Take it easy and keep your comfort high all the time. Have fun on some of the downhills. I know you can do it. It is darn awesome!

Jim

Ritz 04-14-05 04:35 PM

Thanks Bandusa, I will! :) WWW.TOURDEPANTS.COM

Bolo Grubb 04-15-05 10:56 AM

I am still stuck at 180.5, my goal is 170-175 range

but the good news my cholesterol is lower then it has ever been. I just got the results back from a fasting blood test yesterday

Date 04/14/2005
Total Cholesterol 134
LDL 75
HDL 45
Ratio Total/HDL 2.98
Triglycerides 87
Blood sugar 83

Dropping 30 pounds over the last year or so and getting into better shape through cycling do have their benifits :D

GypsyAngel 04-15-05 05:25 PM

Hi! Do you have room for one more?
I'm in the process of shopping for a road bike after riding mtb on and off for years. I did some road biking last summer on my mtb with slicks just to see if I like road biking and I did. Along with my workouts at the YMCA I plan on making road biking a big part of my exercise plan. Plus it's fun!
I want to lose about 75 lbs and when I'm out on my bike I feel like I am just about the only overweight person out there (especially of the female variety). I hope it's not true but it sure feels like it.
Best of luck to all and I look forward to getting to know you!
:D Gypsy

Welcome Gypsy!

My wife recently started riding. So, you are not the only female out there trying to loose weight and get healthy. Ride as much as possible and eat right. You'll do fine. Of course, the most important part is to HAVE FUN!

Bolo-Yo! I can relate! I've been stuck at around 220lbs even though trying to loose weight for the Tax Day Challenge! Very frustrating! I don't know how you can get rid of the the tummy. If you fin the solution let me know. That is where I'm carrying 90% of the weight I have left to loose. Now if I can get the weather to cooperate, I'll be able to concentrate on training for the TT in May! :)

Zin

BostonKate 04-16-05 05:29 PM

Gypsy, we're out there. Promise!

I don't think I've posted in this thread in a good long while - after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the winter, my doc put me on a liquid diet through a local research hospital (all Harvard med school faculty, who are competent despite that handicap ;) ). So far I'm down 20% of my starting weight, and a total of 80 pounds from my highest weight ever. Still have a ways to go, but my glucose has normalized, I'm back on some solid food and - MORE IMPORTANTLY - I bought myself a shiny new road bike to celebrate this week's expected success of no longer being Officially Obese, but merely Overweight.

The funniest thing is how much I like the lower headset on my new bike, though I'd demanded upright position in the past. I guess a lot more changes as one gets smaller than just the pants size! Who knows - maybe I'll end up with drop bars on the next bike.

Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and represent for the fat chicks on bikes :)

GypsyAngel 04-16-05 06:35 PM

Thanks for the welcomes! I finally decided on which road bike to get and will be buying it on Tuesday. (Decided on the Cannondale R700 triple :) ) So let the journey to get in shape continue on the road!

Ritz - what a great website!
Zin - Thanks for the advice. I'm looking forward to frequent and fun rides! Wish your wife the best for me!
BostonKate - Congratulations on your weight loss! That is just awesome! And also congrats on graduating from "officially obese" to "overweight". What a great accomplishment! I look forward to celebrating the same! All the best from a newbie fat chick on a bike! :D

Hey guys, I'll check in again. I've been spending almost all of my "free" time riding, so I don't post a lot. That and I'm out on the bike instead of in the gym, so I haven't been weighing myself alot.

But I have a question for you guys, do you think its a bad idea for me to ride a vintage road bike at 270 pounds?

I have a chance at a '79 bianchi for $25 that is supposedly in good shape and there is no way I'm passing it up. I'm just wondering if I ride it right now, will I break it?
