I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring. I'm 25 and about 6'3" 255. I played football in college and started as an olb at 235 and left as a 290 lb offensive lineman! When I was in school I noticed that many former "hogs" either droped 30-40 lbs or gained it, so I was determined to fall into the category with the former. My first year or so out I was pretty dilegent about working and running and dropped down to around 240, however I started dating my girlfriend a year ago and as Mickey says "Women weaken legs!" So I bought a nice hybrid bike this winter that I just started using for commuting full time from DC to Arlington and riding on the weekends, and am doing a couple short triathalons this summer. My goal is to get down to at least my high school lacrosse weight of 220. Over all I would consider my diet pretty healthy, I cook almost all my meals on the grill, try to limit the dairy and excess carbs and eat a lot of veggies. I've enjoyed reading this thread and am anxious to be able to post some results myself!

Down from 260 to 254.8 this morning - rides are up to 6 miles a night and 9-10 on the weekends or a 4 mile walk if the wife is going.

fat b'stard

Hi

I was a hefty 244 last July, and i drank 2.5 bottles of 14.5% alcohol white wine on July 4th, as well as stuffing my fat greedy face until I was fit to burst.

Following that day I realised it was time I got back into a more healthy lifestyle. I dusted down my Trek and started cycling after work a few days a week. I entirely cut out booze for quite a long time and cut my food portions down drastically.

I went from 244 in July 2006 to 203 pounds in November of 2006. 41 pounds in four months. I was pretty pleased with that. The weight-loss curve tailed off, inevitably, as my body adjusted to the new regimen, but it was still there. I was so pleased the day i weighed 203. I really though that I could go the distance and become a skinny person, like so many folk in Los Angeles. I relished the thought of people saying, 'hey, you look as if a decent meal wouldn't kill ya', and calling me 'stick insect' etc. Me? No way!

Then came Thanksgiving- go on, have a drink, it won't kill you. Have more. Look we really need to eat up all this food, it mustn't go to waste - have another portion, go on, it won't do you any harm.

I gained weight.

Then came Xmas more booze, more food. I gained more weight. Parties, visiting friends...

Then New Year - more weight.

I bought a new bike at Xmas, a Giant OCR3. Fortunately the weather here in LA has been really mild - cold by SoCal standards, but not rainy at all. So I was able to get out with the new wheels. People told me to buy A, B and C for the bike, so I ended up buying the shorts and the shirts and the carbon fibre shoes and pedals, with the clip-ins, you know how it goes. I took to cycling around the park in Encino, so that I didn't need to stop. Thuis far the single longest non-stop ride I have done was 41 miles - eight laps and a bit, of the park.

I have thighs that feel like solid rock, and my calves are pretty impressive too, but my upper body is where al lthe weight is.

I was exercising a lot, and still am - a couple of twenty five mile rides each weekend and riding after work, but my girlfriend makes the best food in the world, and I find it increasingly difficult to resist her comely temptations (food I mean).

Now she is in charge of my food. No more seconds, no more greedy stuff - just healthy, tasty food in smaller portions. Right now I'm weighing in between 215 and 220. 203 was the lowest I had been since I was in my twenties, and I'm now 43 years old.

I had been eating more protein than anything else with very little fat and very few carbs - but it seems to me that the best thing I can do is eat much more in the way of carbs and eat just enough protein.

I shall have a good look through these forums and see what i can glean. Perhaps my dream of being a scrawny bloke can come true after all!

cheers to one and all.

Good luck finding a carb-protein balance, geffel. That's like seeking the holy grail.

I'm stalled out at 164 this morning. I think I'm going to up my riding by 10% or so, and keep the calories & macros the same, and see what happens. It's a bit disappointing to hit a plateau so early in my process but I'll get through.

Inthe10ring 04-23-07 11:06 PM

I have battled a compulsive overeating disorder for as long as I can rememember... Ups and downs since elementary school... In 3 months of biking and diet (as well as can be expected) I'm down from 408 to 306 which puts me just over the 100 lbs mark. (That's right, 102 lbs down!) The battle is still heart breaking, and hasn't gotten any easier... On another positive note, I havn't driven my car since the 26th of March! Commute of about 7 miles round trip, plus an inordinate number of cross town errands, and 30+ mile weekend rides... Good luck to all!

Wow, nice work Ryan. Stay the course!

Quit smoking 5 months ago and Drinking 2 months ago... Went from 275 to 235!

Guitarman33 04-26-07 02:30 PM

Way to go everyone!!! Ryan - you are doing awesome keep it up. Down from 260 to 251lbs this morning and that was after a weeks vacation with no bike but lots of walking.

katie 04-27-07 10:54 AM

I'm still stalled out at 165 but I'm encouraged by everyone here. It's only been a week or so since I tweaked my miles and macros, so perhaps the results will kick in next week as a lower number on the scale.

My legs feel better since upping my protein a bit. That, plus paying closer attention to hydration during the day (not just on rides or immediately before/after rides), makes me think I'm giving my muscles more of what they need.

Let's keep it up guys!!!!

Guitarman33 04-30-07 11:49 AM

Yee Hoooo - at 249.2 lbs today - first time under 250 lbs for 2 years or more!!!!

mateo44 04-30-07 12:47 PM

Nice job guitarman!!

Ricardo 05-04-07 11:50 AM

Hello guys,
last night I stepped on the scale and now I have officially lost my first 10Kgs. (That is around 22 pounds.) I need to lose 8 more pounds and then I will start building some muscle. Will try to post pics soon.

Ricardo

Guitarman33 05-04-07 11:58 AM

Way to go Ricardo!!! Keep plugging away!

Guitarman33 05-07-07 09:04 AM

Checking in - down from 260 to 246.2 this morning!!! When i hit 240 i'm rewarding myself with a new Iron Maiden jersey :) Have a great day everyone!

donhaller 05-07-07 09:32 AM

I'm just checking back - I'm not sure where I was the last time I posted, but I just hit the 50# lost mark. I'm down to 210lbs now and I got about 30 or 35 more to go. It has been slow going trying to get to 200lbs.

Take Care

lechwe 05-07-07 10:28 AM

Don,

That's awesome. Keep up whatever you are doing. I'm down to just under 200 from 218. I'd like to get down near 185 but it is going slow for me as well.

Good luck
