Iowa - Congratulations on your milestone.

I've lost another 1lb to come to 182lbs or 13st in the old imperial way of doing things.

MikeR 04-23-03 06:38 AM

That means that I have lost 1/3 of myself.
Yes you're not the man you used to be. :)

CONGRATULATIONS!

cbhungry 04-23-03 11:32 AM

I lost 60 pounds after I gave birth to my baby girl. It was hard, I basically stopped eating snacks unless I was hungry and I biked more.Did not keep a calorie count or anything but would just not clean my plate as a means of cutting back.

IowaParamedic 04-30-03 08:07 AM

Once again, success!

I weighed 193 lbs this morning. My total weight loss is 101 lbs. It is kinda cool to cross the 100 lb mark.

I have been eating a little stupid lately, but they say as your body loses more fat, it will become more efficient at burning it.

I am noticing that I fit better on the saddle. I can feel where my sit bones are supposed to be. My abdomen is still a little fat, but that is where I store it. My body fat estimate is 18% which is still normal. My BMI is 26 which is just outside the healthy range. I want to have my BMI to be 25 and my final goal is 185 lbs.

Important note: At this point in my weight loss, I am in control. I know exactly what I need to do to lose another pound this week. My next problem will be eating to maintain weight, now especially that biking season is here. I have a month to TOMRV (century on each of 2 days). I have some training goals to meet to get there.

Andy Dreisch 04-30-03 09:50 AM

Way to go Iowa. Amazing.

I'm down to 211 now. I'd like to get under and remain under 210. I've been weightlifting, too, so I can tell I've lost inches but am still hanging around the 210 mark.

ZackJones 04-30-03 11:42 AM

IowaParamedic: Congrats that is a wonderful milestone to surpass. Since I've started commuting my weight has been coming off pretty well. I'm down to 265.5 which is a loss of about 14 pounds since January.

Holding steady at 182lbs which is a bit depressing. Too many Chocolate Easter Eggs. :(

Yeah, holding steady at 226 here.... not depressed though, strangely. Recently threw out a coupla pair of trousers you see....they were too big, still on a high over that.

Will get over this little hurdle QUITE soon.

ZackJones 05-07-03 06:24 AM

I'm down another pound. Weekends seem to be my downfall. Even though I go on longer rides I tend to eat more as a reward for the longer ride. I'm going to try long write and less food on the weekends and see if the downward trend continues.

I got a huge ego boast last night. I was riding solo and passed a couple of ladies walking. I heard one say to the other "wow, check out those calves"

I hope she was talking about my legs and not comparing me to a cow :)

kingajo 05-07-03 07:41 AM

I have been driving trucks for years. And it being such a sedentary job, I couldn't help but gain weight. I started riding again last spring and I went from 230 down to 210 with mostly weekend riding. Then came winter and I had to get back to my winter driving job back over the road. I didn't want to because I knew that I would gain some if not all the weight back and sure enough I did. But I got off that truck April 1st and since then I am back down to 210. No sodas,no fast food and I ride everyday. Except when it rains. And wouldn't you know that this would have to be our wettest April in 20 years. But looks like it is coming to an end. So more miles less junk food. This weekend I do my first organized ride.

IowaParamedic 05-07-03 10:19 AM

Congrats Kingajo. I hope you enjoy your ride. Club rides are always fun.

I have lost some more. I was a 192 this morning. I yo-yo'ed a bit through the 190's, because my wife likes ice cream, but I am back on track.

That leave 7 lbs to my final goal of 185 lbs. Then I have to learn to maintain my weight. <not using Mt. Dew and Doritos>

Funny story - I went to breakfast the other morning. I just got off from work, put on my lycra tights and headed over to a restaraunt for pancakes. I choose the restaraunt because I thought I would not know anybody there. While I was bent over locking up my bike, my co-worker came out of the restaraunt laughing. She said that she was with her mother, and she was checking me out! After her mother said something, she turned and looked and recognized me. We had a bit of a laugh about it.

Heya Zack...

I was sitting on a plane last weekend, wearing shorts, and my wife looks down at my legs, and says "Whoa... your calves are HUGE" I look at her, smile, and tell her it's about time she notices :D I then tell her that it's all the riding i'm doing... it was kinda cool

How many calories are you guys taking in a day to lose weight. i am 250 and I lost 60lbs 2 years ago and got down to 225 but i went on a 1500 cal diet and it killed me. I gained 25 back but I hate running. i hit the weights 3 days/week and i just started riding in the past 2 weeks... give a man some help here...

IowaParamedic 05-09-03 03:05 PM

I don't count calories. I just write stuff down. I don't need to complicate things with caloric input and exercise output. I have been successful weighing twice a day. I know how much I have eaten during the day and compare it to my end of day weight.

The real secret? It's how much water you drink. Really!

Cool deal, Jeff!

Sometimes I'll catch Donna checking out my legs when we're riding. Now if I could just get my upper body to look as good :)

How's the Lemond coming along? I've decided that once I break 200 pounds I'm treating myself to another Lemond. Needless to say I'm super motivated right now.

Zack

SipperPhoto 05-12-03 01:21 PM

Zack,

The Lemond is coming along well... so far I have the Frame and Fork, seatpost, and just got a stem in the mail a couple weeks ago... now i jsut have to save for all the important parts.. i'm hoping to have it done near the end of summer... until then i'm stuck on my early 90's Centurion 6-speed that is starting to have a funky noise coming from the Bottom Bracket i think... although it might just be chainring bolds, or crank bolts.. I have to look at it tonite...

yeha my upper body could use some work... I'm not in too bad a shape about 5'10" and around 170... I just need to lift some light weights and gain some definition... that and working on my lower back and abs... I hate doing ab work !

headliner Large calorie deficits work initially for weight loss when you have alot of weight to lose but you tend to stall out and have problems with low metabolism as your weight gets lower and you plateau.I suggest you up the weights and cycling like your planning to keep the metabolism high and eat enough calories to support this but still a moderate deficit to calories expended.I suggest you start at perhaps a 500 calorie deficit and raise or lower from there in 250 calorie increments if needed based on feedback .I don't count calories myself as I have learned over time how much my body can handle but here is one site that may help you withy some of this. www.exrx.net
Also I suggest you start a new thread and ask about calorie/energy counting sites and you will probably get some good response I know alot of sites have been posted in the past.

Chasbo 05-13-03 07:03 AM

I had the same problem Headliner. I started at 260 and went on a super low cal diet and did alright for 20 pounds but plataeu'd there. After feeling sorry for myself for 5 mins, I started all over but instead of a calorie deficient plan, I just started to make better food choices and concentrated on my riding more. I found that for me the worst things I could eat were breads, pasta and other pointless carbs (as well as all the normal baddies like soda, chips and fried food hehe). Now I get my carbs from fruits and veggies and non fat refried beans. I allow myself a piece of flatbread or a tortilla everyday to make a veggie/humus chicken wrap or a bean/chicken burrito. I also stay away from most cheeses, but do allow myself farmers cheese from time to time. Then I also drink alot of green and black teas and eat non fat yogurts and drink non fat milk. They are metabolic enhancers that will help to raise your metabolism.
Other good ways to raise your metabolic rate are aerobic and anaerobic exercise. So its a good idea to ride alot and lift weights =) Using these idead, I have gone from a 42 inch waist to a 38 inch wasit in no time at all. My goal is a 34 inch waist. Good luck to you man.

Headliner,
Try Weight Watchers.
It is BY FAR, the EASIEST program to follow. You don't have to sweat all of the details of "caloric intake", fat content, Fiber... The Nutritionists and scientists have done most of the difficult stuff, and come up with a simple "points" formula. Basically, everything you eat is assigned a point value, ie, a 1 cup serving of pasta is 4 points. You are then given a range of points where your daily intake should be, ie 30-35 pts. It does take some time to adjust it to your bodies needs, but it really works well. Then there is the wonderful support you get from going to the meetings. It is worth it, trust me.

ChipR: Congrats on your weight loss.

I went to see the doc today for my BP and cholesterol follow up. He was quite pleased with my progress.

Total cholesteral was 181
BP was 137/79
67 BPM pulse rate
good cholesteral was up .4 %
Triglycerides, while still high, dropped considerably. I'm down to 224 which is a 130 point drop from 3 months ago. The doc upped my prescription for Niaspan to see if we can get the triglycerides down even more.

I also like his scale, after deducting 4 pounds for shoes and clothes my weight was 254. The scales I've been weighing on have been reading around 262 - 264 fully clothed.

I still have a long road to go but I'm getting there.

He told me to keep at it and come see him in 4 months. I'm going to schedule my follow up for sometime after my MS-150 ride. I can't wait to knock his socks off by telling him how I rode 100 miles on Saturday and 50 on Sunday. :)

I'm no expert, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The dosage you're on is clearly working for you, why risk anything by increasing it? Your exercise and diet regime (can't remember which one affects triglycerides more) is probably also a factor. I'd keep medication at the same level. But as I say, I'm most certainly no expert!

Do you normally weigh yourself in the morning or evening? Naked or clothed? You may need to chuck the scales, or get his calibrated.

You know, I didn't even think about that when he mentioned it. I'm going to try the higher dosage and if I have any of the side affects that are common with niaspan I'll back the dosage back down to what it was previously.

There's 5 of us in a weight loss club here at work. Every Monday we pay $1.00 to the fund and weigh fully clothed. Since this is the one we're using for the club I'm going to use it as my accurate weight, though I wouldn't mind weighing 254 :)

Alright, I've been lurking for long enough, its time for me to get on my bike and ride where you all can see me.

I'm living in suburban Chicago, and currently weight 215. If I publish it, I hope it will be greater encouragement to do my training rides and watch what I eat.

I'm going for the water plan, similar to IowaParamedic, simply because my wife has also successfully lost weight in eating smart and dringking lots of water.

Keep up your spirits and I'll keep on reporting my progress.

Thanks for listening.
