Improving 1 minute power for last minute of a race

Hey folks,

I need some advice. Did a road race this weekend and did about 500 watts for the final minute of the race (157 pounds and that power was a PR). If I had 600 watts, I would have won but instead I got 5th at less than a second off 1st.

We definitely weren't riding easy for the 10 minutes leading up to the field sprint. What would you train to improve this sort of effort? I know if I had more aerobic fitness, I'd be fresher at the end. And i know if I had more anaerobic strength, I would have been able to dig deeper.

How do you know you would have won? 600W for one minute isn't going to win many races if you have someone sitting on your wheel and it's not enough to stay away from a group unless you're already starting with a decent lead.

if the 500W was a PB then my guess is you haven't been training that period as you'd expect to have a higher power when fresh than at the end of a race. I would continue to work on FTP and focus on short term power 3-4 wks out from a key race. It's faster to train short term power than threshold.
