Does anyone have any idea where to buy powdered glucose in Canada?

I've tried health food stores, pharmacies, pet food stores, and vet supply places with no luck. I was referred to a feed mill where they allegedly sell 50 lb bags of the stuff. Maybe I could swing a deal where they'll skim about 1 lb off for me!!

If you've looked for, and found powdered glucose, where did you get it? Might it be called a different name?

I think that glucose powder is referred to as dextrose monohydrate. I found a couple of web sites that sell it in bulk:

You know its sugar right? Corn syrup is very cheap and almost identical. Dont waste your money at some supplement shpp.

There's sugar and then there's dextrose, sucrose, glucose and etc. and then there is corn syrup, which is pretty wierd stuff and some people are beginning to say it ain't so good for you.

I'd try a bakery supply house for glucose. It has to be around somewhere because I see it listed as the sweetener in imported jams and preservers and such. . .

Try a beer homebrewing shop. They should have bags of "corn sugar" for brewing. That may do for you.

Corn syrup can be bought in 5gal pails at bakery supply houses, or you could just get some clear karo syrup. Corn syrup is 40-50% glucose, and 40-50% fructose with various other disaccharides for the rest (mostly sucrose). There is a lot of hoorah about corn syrup which is enzymatically converted from cornstarch which is a glucose polymer. The initial product is mostly glucose (90% +) which is converted to a roughly half and half mix of fructose and glucose called high fructose corn syrup. Because of the Cuban embargo in the early '60s and political protection of sugar producers (beets in northern US and cane in southern US) sucrose is 3 to 5x as expensive in the US as the world price. HFCS is much cheaper and is basically the same 50-50 mix of glucose and fructose that sucrose is so has displaced cane/beet sugar commercially in million ton amounts. Since some of the enzymes used to make HFCS are genetically enhanced this has fired up those who are against genetically modified (*** whatever). Others think fructose the work of the devil and would ban all fruit, the most common source of fructose after non diet soft drinks. Webbing up all this can be very confusing. Glucose and fructose are slightly better muscle and muscle glycogen energy sources than sucrose, but the difference is going to be a matter of minutes. Fructose is handled a little differently in the liver but liver glycogen once made is the same from either sugar. Sucrose is split in the gut into its components: glucose and fructose. Steve

Yes. The whole mixture I'm concocting has to be powder so I can carry it with me on the bicycle and mix it with water when necessary.

So stuff like corn syrup will not work, nor will liquid glucose (like what they give you when you have a glucose tolerance test).

What's the recipe? Is it easy to mix on the road?

I have been using about one part cheap fruit punch to two parts water and it works fantastic.
I can reverse an impending bonk by drinking a lot at one time if needed.
