New to Smart Trainers and to Wahoo Snap - not sure I'm getting a good start!
I have a Kurt Road Machine, and the local REI had a Wahoo Snap in their Garage sale. With a flourish of the credit card I took it home. Happy wife because she can now claim the Kurt as hers, and happy me will get some training that I find more interesting, and we won't be swapping bikes back and forth.
Getting started is a bit of a hassle so far. I'm assuming there is some kind of default "jump on and ride" mode. I've read on DCRainmaker about the Wahoo app and the firmware update, and I have paired the iPhone app with my Snap. That part of the setup does not seem to need to be repeated if I walk away to consult the Internet or something, but the App seems to always start in the Wizard mode and cannot be taken back to a different Start screen, where perhaps I can see if there any "rides" pre-programmed to just start playing with while I sort out or design a training program.
I have done the Spin-down procedure and the App says I completed it successfully. The riding felt like just a big flywheel. Once I got it up to 22.36 mph it took very little added power to maintain the speed as needed, so I don't think it will add any resistance until I can set up some kind of ride profile, or specify a resistance level. But I don't see how to do this yet.
Does the Snap have a resistance mode where it just emulates the resistance of riding on a level road, like a Kurt Road Machine? I want to start using it by just jumping on and pedaling.
I did not buy the machine new - seems like there should have been some paperwork that would do a better job of orientation than the iPhone app does.
Do I need another app or a different app? Do I need some instruction book from Wahoo? If I tried Zwift would all be as clear as a bell? Do I need to buy a set of Bluetooth sensors before it will show resistance?
Any Snap owners willing to chat and perhaps help me get some traction with this new toy?
As far as training goes, my status is the beginning of base training. My reference for this is the kind of base training advocated by Joe and Dirk Friel in books and (I assume) in their training plans. I just want to be able to start with some consistent riding against some resistance, but more sophisticated than a mag trainer. I've never liked pulling a trigger manually to add more resistance at higher speed.
How can I make the Snap feel like a Road Machine? That's where I would like to start.

I don't have any experience with the Wahoo app besides the power meter calibration. If you use Zwift then you'll experience variable resistance on uphill climbs that simulate the real climbing experience quite well; requiring gear shifts and/or out of saddle climbing. I'm quite happy with my Snap.

It's a crappy app, i never use it, I use Zwift, but if you don't want to use Zwift or TrainerRoad or PerfPro or Sufferfest or... whatever else is out there...
It sounds like you are stuck in the sensor configuration ('wizard') menu. you can back out of that with a "done" on the upper left of the screen. On that screen with the "wizard mode" on the bottom right there should be a "workout" icon - tap that that and then pick the "indoor Bike workout type, then tap Start to get to the workout screens, there are a few screens, one of them has a place where you can adjust the resistance, a couple of different ways - level, resistnace, erg mode.
you can configure what is on the workout screens in the setting menu.
here's a link to the crummy instructions:

I borrowed a friends Snap, and was able to ride it without using a setup manual so maybe I can help.
The first thing I did was download the Wahoo Fitness app for my iPhone, then followed their 3-step setup, and confirmed that the sensor was connected via Bluetooth to my phone. You'll get confirmation on the Sensors screen when your phone and the trainer are synched up.
My riding app of choice was FulGaz. It's video-based riding that takes advantage of the trainers smart capabilities.
Yes, this trainer will tweak resistance based on ride profile.
I thought FulGaz was a nice "jump on and ride" app, that allowed me to get in rides, with some interactivity, and power number feedback. I would then import my rides into Strava for logging.

PerPro users?
Ant+ with PerfPro is pretty reliable. It had no problem connecting to all of my devices (Wahoo) and maintaining the connections of an extended period of time (Zwift kept dropping one device or another even when using Ant+ from the Windows app).
However, PerPro is a very dated application, or feels like it. There are basic usage interface problems (layout management, option setting, etc.) that feel like a c. 2000 era application, not something that was meant for modern UI usability.
That aside, I am encouraged by the training content, but feel hesitant to fork out $100 for an application that has this out of date UI.
Anyone have experience with this application that can convince me that this would be worth the expense?

I can't help you with PerfPro, but I don't have any of the problems you're describing with Zwift. I just use an Ant+ setup with my laptop. Works great. (Bluetooth doesn't seem to be as reliable, in my experience.)

I used to do a class where they used PerfPro for the group. If i was going to use an app to do workouts I would use TrainerRoad. I was using that happily before Zwift, it has a good set of built in workouts and a very good workout builder, and it does power matching so i could use my powertap to provide accurate power measurement and the Snap in ERG mode to control resistance for intervals. Snap power meaasurement is poor.
I never trialed PerfPro personally, so not sure what workouts are included.
I'm just using Zwift at this point, since the social/interactive part makes it so much more engaging.
