Will a turbo trainer wear out my rear tire more than the road would?

I'm starting to do a bit a training on a turbo with my CX bike, which has Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 35mm tires fitted.

These are fairly expensive tires, so I'm wondering whether I the turbo will wear them out faster than the equivalent time riding on the road.

I've also seen it suggested that long-term use can deposit some of the metal from the turbo's roller on to the tire, and worsen its traction.

Is uneven front-rear tire wear a problem, and is it recommended to just have a completely separate wheel with a slick tire for use on the turbo?

Thanks!

John.

I have the same question. I'm going to have to do mostly trainer miles this summer on account of the kids being out of school, and I'm a little concerned about wear on the bike/tires. Anyone have an opinion about this? I know you do!

Depends on the trainer. I've never noticed any additional wear on a Kurt kinetics trainer but it has a larger diameter roller than most. Smaller rollers and high pressure might be harder on tires.

Possibly.

Maybe not with all trainers, but the roller on my CycleOps trainer started turning the center of my road tire silver after just a single 1-hour session, and was replaced almost immediately with a trainer-specific tire.

Possibly. I recommend a trainer tire just for the decreased noise and increased smoothness. Results may vary, but noise from the rear tire dropped by over half when going to a trainer tire.
