Machka's Goals

Half marathon in January ... Done!!


Gradually build up cycling distance ticking off milestone distances along the way. The goal behind this is to build a solid base for further long distances and events in 2020.
50 km
75 km
100 km
125 km
160 km (100 miles)

Get back to climbing 20+ flights of stairs at least 4 days each week. I work in a 10-storey building, and can climb 10 flights in the morning, and 10 flights in the afternoon ... plus extras if I want.



Walk (or run or hike ... basically move by foot) more than last year.

These are my walking/running/hiking totals for the past few years ... so ... more than 1357.1 km in 2019 would be good.

2018 - 1357.1 km
2017 - 1302.52 km
2016 - 1133.02 km
2015 - 1131.7 km


And build some upper body & core strength + improving flexibility.


EDIT: Just a tiny bit of background ... I think you all know Rowan's situation starting last year (see my sig line) and I've been diagnosed with greater trochanteric pain syndrome in my right hip and right lumbar facet joint inflammation in my back. Plus I've got the flu right now.

Hence ... going back to the basics.

Set up my weight lifting setup today all barbells and dumbbells with a cage. So one goal is to get stronger and keep the muscle I have but make it harder. Another goal is to burn the 13 pounds I gained from a 5 month layoff so far so good I am on week 4 being back on my bikes. Ride the Katy Trail in Missouri again lol. Another goal is to stay out of the orthopedic surgeons office for 2019 but my hands are getting dupuytrens again I think i will make 2019 surgery free I want to get more hikes in for 2019 so I have a hiking section in my workout logs. 2019 no ego weight lifting that put me in hospital with triple hernia in 2015 so lesson learned. Less weight more reps More adventure bike riding wherever I can find a cool place to ride. Healthier diet without being too radical for 2019. Thatís all for now but Iím sure there will be more 2019 goals.

Do pretty much in 2019 what I did in 2018, but do it better, be more consistent, more intervals, etc. I was on a statin last year and came down with PMR, so this should be doable. We'll go on a hub-and-spoke bike tour with friends in June in the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene area. We'll do our usual mountain rides and then RAMROD on my single. In early September, we'll do our annual 10-day packpack. We missed doing it last year because I was such a mess. We might even squeeze in an unsupported camping tour in June. Have to see how our conditioning comes. Definite maybe.

Update: dropping the weight training goal and going all out bike and hike for 2019. I tried the concurrent training thing and I was miserable. I gravel grind mostly but will MTB and Fatbike and even road bike. That will take up all my energy

Just getting into shape after years of doing little to no exercise. I will be continuing with eating healthier, and drinking water in lieu of sugary drinks. Lost over 40 lbs so far, with about 15 more to go. I'm following an online fitness program which has helped with core, upper and lower body strength, and has helped with my flexibility. I'd also like to do some longer distance riding this summer.

My training goals have regressed to simply "Get as fast as I can with as little training as possible."

So far the little training as possible is happening...the getting fast part has yet to come to fruition.

Add 5 mi a week (current 35,) and loose 1 # a week by May 1st. May 4th ride 100 mi in under 10 hours in Shiner G.A.S.P. 100. Then move to CO. and train for late Sep. ride from 8,500 feet to 10,700. If I can achieve both goals I will be satisfied with my cycling life and settle down to just having fun rides.

My 2019 goals are as follows:
1. Keep up on my club's "Fritter Friday" ride (a fast group ride done every Friday). Last year I was a strong B group rider, but struggled a bit with the As. There is one section that is an all-out hammer fest and I'd like to be able to stay with the A group this year. Pretty much every other goal is driven by this.
2. Do a duathlon - I'm signed up for one in September. My wife has started getting into triathlons, but I don't like to swim (I'm an okay swimmer, I just don't like it) so I'm doing this while she does a triathlon. It also means I can just wear my cycling kit and I don't have to buy a special suit.
3. Weigh less than 150 (mostly to be faster for #2 ). I'm 155 currently. I'm in no real rush to get down. As long as I don't eat too poorly (I have a real sweet tooth) I should make it pretty easily once the mileage really picks up.
4. Lift weights 100 times year. I'm on track so far.
5. 6245 km ridden. This is what I did last year, I'd like to better it.
6. FTP of 3.5 w/kg. I'm at 3.45 right now, so I think I'll beat this easily. Also I'd like a minimum of 250 FTP. I'm at 243, so I'm pretty sure I'll make this.
7. Squat 275x5. This one isn't a high priority and will wait until the fall for me to really think about. 275x5 used to be deload weight for me. Now, I'm not sure if I can do it at all.

fitness: get my ftp up to 300w (started at 275 12 weeks ago, at 285 now, hopefully will change to 295 next week) and weight back down to 155 (at 160 now), get a lot better at suffering over 8-10mins
competitive: start to get top 10 in CX races (my 10th/15 this past season doesn't count lol), no road racing goals because I have no real idea how I stack up against the competition like I know the CX fields.
fun: get out for some fun long rides with people this summer, especially some of the really fast folks

I’m racing the 5 and 10k TTs at National Senior Games in Albuquerque in June. These distances in no way play to my strengths but I don’t care, it presents a unique training challenge and I’m curious to see how it goes.

I may race the SoCal State TT two weeks prior to the NSG TTs. That’s a 40k which would normally be more in my wheelhouse. But the prep for the 5k and 10k TTs is different enough that I’m not going to specifically prepare for the State TT. And it’s in the desert in June. It could be miserably hot. We’ll see.

Ill race 20k TTs consistently before and after the NSG race.

I don’t really have any racing performance goals beyond being as well-prepared as I can be for my races.

Also would like to continue to develop mountain bike skills, will be doing another Trek Dirt Series camp this year. Just enjoying time on the bikes- planning on road biking trips to Paso Robles and Carmel, and mountain biking trips to Santa Fe, Tahoe, Mammoth Lake, and Sedona. Enjoying training, for me that includes trainer workouts, strength workouts, road and mountain rides.

Plus balancing it all with dog performance events- hound and terrier stuff- with my little mini dachshund.

I'm actually giving legitimate "training" a try. Rather than just riding around, I'm starting in on intervals and such. I'd like to see if I can keep up with a slightly faster group this season - I think it will help me improve as a cyclist.

I'm hooked on TrainerRoad now and hope to keep that going. Got my weight down to 202 this morning, would like to drop another 20lbs. I started lifting weights this winter so I would like to keep the strength gains I made as much as possible without detracting from ride training. I have pre-registered for Paris-Brest-Paris so I have to do all the qualifiers and I want to finish and finish strong so just going for more efficiency on the long distance stuff.

I tend to do more weightlifting in the winter, and then focus on outdoor activities in the spring/summer/autumn.

I am still trying to figure out my cycling goals for this season. I would like to do 10 race days consisting of timed events at the velodrome and road time trials and hill climbs. However, the racing event calendar is fluid and promoters seem not to be able to get their act together to put up race dates. I planned to go to Vancouver to race the time trial in the UCI grand fondo world road racing qualifier but the promoter decided not to offer the time trial, then he said he was considering it and now he says it is a low probability. That sounds like a no.

A lot of races have been cancelled this year for various reasons. Also, the Vancouver race is somewhat in conflict with masters track nationals in Carson this year so there is that as well.

With that as a "goal" backdrop, I like structured training on the road, the track and on the trainer. I do at least one structured track session in Carson each month with a coach that I like a lot. Next week, I am doing several sessions at Carson along with some aero testing. Doing a structured workout with a coach and a group of his athletes is in some ways a lot more fun than racing.

I am not a big fan of riding a lot so a three hour ride is a lot for me so endurance rides end up being about 2 hours so I make it count. I like riding my bike but as Groucho Marks once said, "I love my cigar, too, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while."

I used to play classical piano and I have restarted playing again. Talk about structured training...drills, drills and more drills.

I'm just starting to run again after nearly a year off.

I am cycling occasionally, but we still haven't done a 50 km ride.

I have been trying to climb more stairs and built up to about 15 flights on occasion.

I'm about 300 km behind last year, but have hit the 1000 km point!

Through a combination of pilates, rowing, and weights, I hope I'm improving the upper body and core strength, and perhaps my flexibility too.

Well, I missed a bunch of these.
1. While I got faster, I learned a valuable lesson, most of the regular A riders also get dropped by a couple of guys who are head and shoulders above the rest. I'm definitely an "A" rider now, but I still get dropped when it gets really hard. I came close a couple of times, but just couldn't quite hold on.
2. Did this. Came in 8th overall (but 4th-7th were all also in my age group) https://www.sportstats.ca/display-re...?raceid=101566 I'm definitely going to do more this year (but likely triathlons instead of duathlons).
3. Got down to 152, so missed this. Ultimately, I didn't care enough about the milestone to make a real effort to get down to it.
4. Looking like I'll be at 94, so just a bit short.
5. Roughly 7500 km ridden, so did this one easily.
6. Testing again today (I test every year on Dec 31 or Jan 1), but I got up to ~3.7 w/kg and 257 this year. So, success.
7. Not even close. Just never really felt like lifting, so when I did, I had to really force myself to do it. Plus, I have a stress fracture right now which is forcing me to take it easy.

Ride the Prospect Park loop for 6 laps/20 miles in under an hour and 20 minutes.

Bench press 205 lbs x 4

If I can do those, be a good year ; )
