You dont have to tell me. I doubt i will ever make the protien bars again, and i'll check the chinese market near the office for cheaper flax seed oil.

My wife just made me some Key Lime Creme Brulee with Splenda instead of sugar and it turned out gritty like a mousse. Still, it tasted good.

Mmmmm....just made the granola bars - the second recipe from the original post. Very tasty, nice crunch. I added 1/2 c flax seed and 1/2 c coconut (tosted with the nuts, etc.), and put in dried cranberries, apricots, and dates. They did turn out a little bit crumbly, and a little over-sweet, though - maybe I added a little too much dried fruit?

I found this googling something else last week, haven't tried it yet:

https://draco.acs.uci.edu/rbfaq/FAQ/9.28.html

Subject: 9.28 ==> Powerbars NO more ---> homemade -- YES!!!
From: econrad@teal.csn.org (Eric Conrad)

I don't know about any of you out there in cyber-mtbike-land, but I was
getting tired of buying Powerbars and other nutrition supplements to enhance
my riding. However, I do understand the benefit of having a quick, nutritious
snack that is full of energy on hand during a ride.

So I asked around and came up with a recipe for Powerbar-like bars that seem
to have a lot of what we need. I'll place the recipe here on the Usenet for
all to copy, distribute ... [but please don't market them, cause I'll only
kick myself for not doing it first ;-) ].

Please make them and enjoy them before you think about flaming me. Trust me,
you'll like them much more than Powerbars, and they're cheaper to make than to
buy their counterpart.

ALSO, PLEASE POST ANY OTHER RECIPES YOU HAVE FOUND THAT HELP BIKING
PERFORMANCE!!!

Eric

BARS OF IRON :-}

1 Cup dark raisins
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 Cup golden raisins
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 Cup butter or Margarine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 Cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 egg
1/2 Cup liquid milk
1 1/4 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 Cup quick cooking oats
1/4 Cup toasted wheat germ
1 Cup sliced almonds (optional)
1/2 Cup golden molasses (dark is ok also)
1/2 Cup Nonfat dry milk

Chop raisins (in food processor if possible). Cream butter, sugar, molasses &
egg.

Combine flour, dry milk, wheat germ, baking powder, baking soda, salt and
ginger. Blend into creamed mixture with liquid milk. Stir in oats, raisins,
and half the almonds (if desired).

Pour into greased 13x9x2 inch pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle with remaining
almonds (if desired).

Bake at 350 degrees for approx. 30 minutes. Cool in pan and cut into 1x4 inch
bars.

IMO, you could probably add more fruit if you wanted to leave out the sugar, or, if you're into that stuff, choose artifical sweetener. Personally I think that stuff is worse for you than the sugar would be, though, and it doesn't look like it's all that much sugar compared to the other ingredients.

I made a great recovery meal/snack - brown rice cooked in fat free milk, honey, raisins, Pumpkin Pie Spice, and Egg Beaters tossed together and baked in oven at 350 degrees for about 20 mins. or until lightly browned on top. Best yummy hot ... great cold with a dollop of fat free vanilla yogurt.

I have a bunch of recipes I've found on the net. This is the one I'm currently using and so far my favorite. Don't know where I found it.

Power Bar
Recipe Yields 10
Per serving: Calories-140/ Carbs-23g /Protein-15g /Fat- .5 g
Cost Per Serving- $0.55 ( oatmeal and eggs were on sale, reduced calorie syrup is most costly component)
Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups rolled oats (I used quick oats)
1 1/2 cups powdered non fat milk
1 cup sugar free or reduced calorie fructose sweetened pancake syrup
(nutrition stats based on reduced calorie..s/f syrup may reduce carbs a little more)
2 egg whites
1/4 cup Orange Juice
1 tsp Vanilla
1/4 c. natural applesauce
4 scoops vanilla whey protein powder
1/2 cup chocolate chips (I added that!!)

Directions:
-Preheat overn to 325
-Mix all the dry stuff in bowl to blend it
-Add in remaining ingredients and mix well. Consistency is sort of like cookie dough
-Spread on cooking sheet coated with non-stick spray. You can use a 9X12 baking dish if you want it thicker.
-Bake until edges are crisp and browned. Since the protein is choc. flavored you might not noticed the top brown that much.
-Cut into 10

Hi,
you want mostly carbs when you ride. But... you can easily get protein.
Buy nonfat powdered milk, or use eggs or eggbeaters, or lowfat tofu. Any of them will work because they all have protein.

These bars barely qualify as recipes. You just take a sweetener ( use honey)
and a starch (like oatmeal) and a small amount of oil,a little protein, and dried fruits and nuts for flavor and texture.

It's easy. If you use oats, honey and milk or tofu, you don't need to cook.
Go easy on the fruits and nuts. If you have a favorite flavor, like vanilla or chocloate, get some in there.

I bought some great-smelling granola at an Amishman's booth at the local farmer's market yesterday. Can I just mix that with honey and a little peanut butter? What makes it into a "bar" exactly? I mean, what holds it together? Wouldn't it just be a gooey mess? Should I get some kind of crackers (wheat?) and sandwich it between them, then pop them into a ziplock?

Hi,
try baking it for a while in a 300 degree oven to dry it out some.
How long? Depends. Some guys like gooey and some like crunchy.
You'll get the hang of it.
