upper end of zone, hr monitor input needed

I finnaly broke down and got a heart rate monitor and set the zones after taking my morning resting heart rate(35) adjusted to polar's website. I hit the trainer this morning for an hour and never got over 129, I got off the trainer and headed out for my 5k run right after and never got above 148. Based off polar's site I need to be around 165(85%) for effective training, is this right?

You need to know your max HR. And the general formulas are not a good predictor.
It could be that you have a low max (more genetics than anything), in which case those lower numbers would be "normal."

Otherwise you are just in good shape.

Trainers suck for HR, ride outside. You're in Reno so climb a hill then see what your HR is.
How old are you?
Are you a world class athlete, noob, 50 yo former State champ, what?
Over weight? perfect health?
Iron man triathlete?
This and about a gazzilion more questions could possibly start to answer your question.

What pace was your 5k?

my post was made in slight haste as I went for a ride outside today and my heart rate worked up to around 150.
24
no racer just a dedicated exerciser who competes occasionally in duathalons and running events
5'11" 142lbs (use to be 230+lbs)
5k pace only is around 19:30, after a ride it drops to around 20:45

Since winter is looming just over the sierra's I got the trainer to start to develop an off season schedule as this is my first winter since I got my bike and it gets to damn cold outside to ride. Any suggestions?

After checking with a cardiologist I confirmed that a morning resting heart rate in the 30-40 is not uncommon for a young athletic individual to have. Now if I had the lung capacity or the power output of LA then VIVA LA FRANCE, tour here I come.

Im 42 and have a RHR of 40. My lowest recorded HR was 9 years ago prior to a VO2 max test and it was 32. I just have a big pump.

If you are a very fit 24 year old riding at 5kft evelation you should be able to get your HR over 150. Its possible that you have a genetically low hr, but 'most' could get theirs higher.

Was this a hard ride? Where you short of breath to the point of not....being....able....to....talk...? If not, ride to that point, where you have to take breaths between words while speaking. Your HR at that point will be closer to your max.

it was a taxing ride but not to the point of loss of breath, I will have to try again on sunday by climbing some of the hills around here(which I suffer on) and see how it goes. You seem to know a lot about the area, did you move from here?
