Gatordate Propel
Opinions? I've had tons of the stuff in hot summer months of years past while not even on the bike (I sweat a lot no matter what I do!). I don't have a good source for large quantities of it, though. Is there a powdered version? (that sounds too good to be true!)
(I spotted a bottle in the bagel shop this morning on my bike commute. Hit the spot, as I had forgotten my water bottle this morning.) |

Funny how the lemon is probably my least favorite... :D but thanks for the research! I will hold out hope for a powder, because we can't be certain that they would sell it online even if it was made and sold elsewhere (I'm such an optimist).

Sam's Club sells a HUGE container of Gatorade powder; unfortunately, it only comes in Lemon-Lime.

I like black cherry to. I'll ask Max (CSR for a wholesaler) that I deal with at the gym. You never know. Propel just might have something in the works. |
I've been trying to find this, doesn't seem to be anywhere in NYC, there's just regular GAtorade, what's the difference?
|
I wouldn't say it can't be found in NYC, but it's not exactly prevalent either. It's basically Gatorade with the sugar mostly replaced by Splenda (I think). That is, an electrolye drink, as opposed to a full sports drink. Pretty low in calories, like maybe 30 for a whole 20+oz bottle.

From what I remember, Propel only has sodium, no other electrolyte. Personally, I'd rather take electrolyte supplements or (second best) dilute the gatorade. I only drink this sort of thing on longer rides anyway.
Please, prove me wrong! |

So does anyone have a good home brew recipe? I’ve come across a few in the past, but I’ve never taken the time to write them down.
I know maltodextrin is supposed to be the best type of “sugar” to use. Where the heck do you get this stuff? Then add a little salt and potassium (no salt). How much? Does anyone think making your own sports drink is worth the time to save some money? |

10 tbs. sugar (5/8 cups or 120 grams) .75 tsp salt (4.2 grams) 1 package of unsweetened Coolade mix for flavor Water to make 2 liters Recipe #2 1/2 cup orange juice 9 tbs. Sugar 3/8 tsp Salt Water to 2 liters |
I also prefer to dilute regular gatorade - generally at about 1 to 1. I'm not sure how much good this is doing. Any opinions?

Propel is too sweet for my tastes.
I do miss the Lime flavored Gatorade Ice though....what happened to those? Elvish |

I've never had the Propel, but I've had the new gatorade lemonade. I may try it if they have the lemonade, though.

Blah. Thanks for the warning. That's not too tasty sounding to me. :(

Propel is quite tasty. I think it uses Splenda which is WAAAAAY better than things like Nutrasour. :D

VIVA LE EMER'GEN-C!!!!! Gatorade Propel is crap, its mostly High Fructose Corn syrup, you might as well drink a coke. |
I found a great sports elctrolyte drink mix & comes in powder packets.
I was never able to use Gatorade due to it's artificial sweetness and also gave me stomach cramps. A friend introduced me to LowOz in '03 and I don't use anyhting else. It comes in citrus flavour powder (tastes great) and I feel hydrated and energized within a few minutes. Here is some info on it: It features exclusive Rapid Replenishment technology that not only delivers a blend of essential electrolytes, energy-efficient nutrients, and antioxidants but delivers it in an effective manner. The secret? Low osmolality: LowOz tested at 150 compared to Gatorade, etc. which tests at 300. As you all know the osmolality of blood is 250, therefore it would make sense to choose a sports drink that would enter your bloodstream rapidly. LowOz™'s electrolyte blend combines potassium, sodium, and magnesium in an optimal proportion to maintain water balance during exercise. The electrolyte blend helps you maintain your fluid balance during exercise so you can benefit from your workout and avoid exhaustion.* LowOz™'s energy blend combines slow metabolizing (fructose) and fast metabolizing carbohydrates (maltodextrin) and B vitamins to provide energy sources to sustain your workout.* LowOz™'s antioxidant blend includes vitamin C and an OPC blend (grape seed extract and maritime bark extract). This blend provides powerful flavonoids, catechins, and other antioxidant properties to support your body's natural antioxidant defense mechanism.* I currently have some local cyclists trying out the product. One of the more prominent users of this product is Jan Ullrich. Anyone want to try it? Email me at amcdowell@cogeco.ca La Chica |
"Propel is sweetened with artificial sweetener and only has 10 calories per bottle. Not much better than drinking water."
Hmmm, the Propel fitness water I buy contains 6g of sucrose syrup. It also contains 30 calories, 105 mg of sodium, 9g of carbs, and vitamins per bottle. Potassium is listed under ingredients, but not under the nutritional facts. There are three servings per bottle. I use Propel like most people use Gatorade. One bottle per two hour ride. I believe Heed by Hammer has similar contents without the vitamens. Heed comes in powder. |
