Can you shrink Lycra?

I bought some winter pants / bibs that are actually too big... Can I wash them and put them in the dryer? Can you shrink Lycra?

Lycra won't shrink, and putting Lycra in the dryer is likely to melt it.

Try your local dry cleaner to see if they do alterations - they can take it in, just like a pair of pants. It might cost you about $10.

Actually all my lycra gear has shrunk slightly with wear and washing so it depends on how much you need it to shrink. You could try it in the dryer but not for too long. BTW I don't actually put mine in the dryer so beware and keep an eye on it if you try.

Regards, Anthony

I dry all of my lycra in the dryer set on HOT... never had a problem.
None of it shrunk.

Putting lycra in the dryer won't shrink it, probably won't melt it, but it will cause it to wear out faster. The heat can deteriorate the rubber/elastic component. It should be lined dried, as a rule.

That said, if I'm running late with laundry and I've *got* to have my bike shorts...well...I've been known to throw them in the dryer.

Putting them on top works well, too - less heat, but still faster than line drying.
