What are you thinking/doing as you ride?

What are you guys doing, or thinking, as you ride?
Here are some of the things I'm doing:
- talking to myself
- listening to that noise coming from the back derraileur
- trying to figure out how fast I'm going
- singing

I go back and forth. Sometimes I'm singing in my head and sometimes I'm going over German words and sentences (I'm currently taking German 101).

I have a hilly loop which keeps things pretty simple. It keeps me in a stay on the bike and don't pass out mode.

Usually I'm just trying to rid my mind of some crappy song that gets stuck on repeat.

Or thinking about how nice it would be to see some other cyclists out once in a while.

Not just when I'm cycling. . . . I always have a song in my head. Always. I sing on the bike a lot, sometimes just to see if I can (I could never sing cadence while running) and for the fun of it.

And sometimes, I pretend I'm racing. I'm not the only one who does it, I'm the only who's admitted it so far. There's a difference.

My mind wanders all over the place...

Typical riding type thoughts?

Which route should I take?
Should I pass the person up ahead?
Is my cadence quick enough/
Should I slow down for that car stopped ahead?
Did I just ride over a friggen goat head again?
Should I go a little farther today?

Typical non-riding thoughts?

Did that girl just say something to me?
Wonder if I should say hi to those people coming the other way?
Boy, those are pretty egrets...
Wonder what I'm going to do later?
Wonder if I should call my wife and have her join me?

I focus on the song "Bicycle" by Queen . I LOVE that song (huge Queen fan here).

"I want to ride my bi-cy-cle... I want to ride my biiike!"

I also think about my new LeMond Reno that i am getting in November. After I get it I guess I will think about my next coffee break .

This is what I love about biking....

My problems go away and I'm one with the road. Except for watching out for the cars out there on the road. That's what I love about this. I get numb from the world.

Like many others.....I've often got a song running through my head (sometimes a good one, sometimes some crappy one on repeat also).

MANY other times, I'm thinking about work....I have a job that often requires a lot of "thinking" about what I do....so I'm stuck thinking about how I'm going to do something. How am I going to intergrate that Agilent power supply device driver with the powerten power supply device driver? Or should I just make them seperate device drivers? If they are seperate, will common names conflict from the private header files? What are the scope rules again? Why am I still stuck in Florida? I want to find a good position in Seattle and move out there.

One of the best things about riding is that point after I get warmed up and I get into a good rhythm. Then there is a point that I don't think anything. It doesn't last too long but I appreciate the fact that I can empty my mind for a bit. If I'm struggling, I guess I'm the opposite of jrennie, I focus on the pain. Gets me to the same place, empties my mind.

Funny you should mention that! Yesterday I just wasn't in the mood to ride to work but I made myself do it. As the ride continued, I was enjoying it more and more. I listen to a bike radio and "Bicycle" came on! I took that as a confirmation of my decision to ride. I'll remember that the next time I hesitate.

... don't become road kill...
... pretty tree...
... stupid squirrel...
... don't become road kill...
... stupid new contacts...
... river parkway prettier than streets...
... some ass left garbage on the parkway...
... don't become road kill...
... stupid undies bunching up...
... hot guy...
... that was dumb, I almost road-killed myself...
... don't become road kill...
... poor suckers stuck in their cars on a great day like this...
... hello bunny wabbit (photo op?)...

Same here. Especially the song thing. If i didnt think i would get killed, i'd get me an MP3 player to listen to on my commutes.

It would be nice if someone could make a tiny speaker that can be built into a bike helmet. I'd much rather listen to an AM news station.

Go slow Rod you're warming up right now.
Do I see any mud puddles I can toss this cigarette butt in?
Any cars, ok right turn.
Stop sign. Any cops around? Any kids around?( don't want to be a bad example ) OK should I run it?
Bumps, aghhh! #*%^#& wish they would fix this street.
OK highway. Good its clear. Man where did that semi come from? Hold on~~~~~~~
Railroad tracks, slow down.
Any silly a**** drivers who just woke up out of the campground coming to run me over?
Ahh. The trail.
Argg! Sticks
Argg! Leaves. Are they wet.
Man, I should have worn a scarf, the wind is killing my neck. Jacket hood up!
Mhmhmh. Can't talk, strap too tight with hood under helmet.
Missed the squirrel.
Missed the bunny. Missed the bunny. Missed the bunny.
The grasshoppers are driving me nuts!
Oooo. Yuck. Man this cattle auction lot stinks.
Those $(*% drained the cattle lot across the path again and the back wheel is spraying it all over my jacket!!!
Gravel on the trail watch it!
Silt mud on the trail watch it!
Really old people walking ahead, slow down, warn them. "On your left" Darn, didn't hear me. "ON YOUR LEFT!" Dag nabbit, I scared them again. Been too long since I learned CPR.
Oooo. Nasty sewer treatment plant smell. Yuck!
Oooo. I am down wind from the pig farm again. YucK!
Now that I held my breath the last half mile here comes the mile of constant upward elevation.

a couple of songs that get stuck in my head:
"clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right...stuck in the middle with you" usually when I'm waiting at a busy intersection, knowing I'm getting eye-balled by the guy in the car next to me.

the doors: "keep your eyes on the road, yer hands on the wheel"...goin' to the roadhouse....da da da...

Total zen.

I worked hard to get zen past an hour, I'll never look back now - I feel so rested after a ride nowadays...

The first five miles, I am usually kicking around the last few things before I started my ride (work, school, and so on).

The next seven or eight miles, everything else fades away and I focus on the rhythm of my spin, the feel of the road, the wind over my face, or the open sky before me.

The last couple miles, I try to stay in focused and in the moment, but inevitably end up thinking about the things I was on the first part of my ride.

I mentally taunt the animals by the side of the road. The dogs respond most of the time. I know they want a piece, but as long as I'm going at least 10mph (that first 10mph is the hardest for me to get through) when they make chase, I haven't been caught yet.

Also, I pretend I'm racing. But in my imagination, I'm always losing
