PB and J
Peanut butter and jelly before a ride! MMmmmmm....!
Does it hurt your performance, or does it help? I think it helps me. |
Peanut butter? Good stuff (I like the kind you have to stir up.)
|
Lets see, PB&J, Sugar, protein, carbs, what more could you
ask for? On some of the organized rides that I've done they have PB&J at the rest stops. Agree with LBM the kind that you have to stir (without the shortening) is much better. Marty |
Whole grain bread and a little peanut butter. What could be better?
|
Peanut butter with fresh fruit wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla with a nice glass of skim milk. Mmmmm.
|
PB&J wrapped in a zip-lock and shoved into a Camelback, that way the bread is all smushed and soft. During a pit stop after that long climb, about an hour in, looking over a mountain valley, with fresh blueberry bushes on the edge of the stop with their fruit rippening in the sun.
With some friends and your dog, who by the way is eating the blueberries right off the bushes like a deer! That would be better! (Tsali weekend trip summer of '97) L8R |

You guys are cool!:D
|
PB&J is the food of the Gods. Most organized rides have it and I've been known to wolf down two thick sandwiches in succession!!! I don't even bother with the jelly. PB baby !!!
|
I've always loved PB. Also PB cookies and Reeces PB cups. One day I have to try a smushed PBJ sandwich- I've heard that the USPS gets them at food stations.
:p |
At what point in history did Jam start being called Jelly? Do American's have Jam or is it always referred to as Jelly.
The only Jelly I know of is the scary wobbly stuff that is given to tonsillitis patients. Just curious? BTW Peanut butter and JAM is fantastic. CHEERS. Mark |
Toast a corn tortilla on a griddle, and spread with tahini (sesame paste), apple butter and pumpkin seeds.
Oops. You did say PB, didn't you? But I love all kinds of nut butters equally - almond, cashew, sunflower, peanut, and sesame! |
Here is more than you ask for about jam and jelly :-) (Though when talking about PB&J, I doubt that people worry too much about the technical details when they're trying to talk through the PB stuck to the roof of their mouths!)
From http://www.howstuffworks.com/question84.htm Question What is the difference between jelly, jam and preserves? And what exactly is Jell-O? Answer Jelly, jam and preserves are all made from fruit mixed with sugar and pectin. The difference between them comes in the form that the fruit takes. In jelly, the fruit comes in the form of fruit juice. In jam, the fruit comes in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit (and is less stiff than jelly as a result). In preserves, the fruit comes in the form of chunks in a syrup or a jam. Pectin is an undigestible carbohydrate (fiber). It is found in the cell walls of most fruit. When heated with sugar in water, it gels, giving jam, jelly and preserves their thickness. Jell-O is entirely different. It is made from gelatin, which is a protein made from animal skins and bones. |
Has anyone ever tried almond butter? I was told that it's supposed to be better than peanut butter.
|
If you mean by taste, I think almond butter is awesome! I buy it at Whole Foods, where they sell just about every type of nut butter in bulk (presumably less expensive than buying a branded jar, I've never checked.)
If you meant by nutricion, the different types of nuts/nut butters have varied nutritional profiles, so swapping between different types of nut butters will offer you a different mix of nutrients. |
My standard pre ride breakfast is a peanut butter sandwich. And I usuallly take a couple with me for long rides.
But I have never been able to do the jelly thing. |

I quit eating it for a week one time. I don't remember much about that week. I think lack of PB in your diet causes malnutrition. :p |
Jello? I try to eat it a lot. Supposed to be good for your joints and stuff. :p I go for the sugarless.
Love jelly, especially odd flavors, but the fat content of PB usually keeps me scared off. Too bad, I love it. |
Yuck, I was once (Just 15 min ago) a jello fan, not any more!
|
After 50 years of not liking Jello, I finally have a good reason.:)

I <3 peanut butter!
and Jam is my favorite, followed by jelly then preserves. Hazelnut butter is awesome too (nutella). What is this pb you have to stir (without shortning?) where can i find it? who makes it? |
It's natural peanut butter--made from ground peanuts and peanut oil only. The oil tends to separate and you have to stir it up.

This kind of peanut butter (the oily kind) is the best for you. "Natural" peanut butter can actually clear your arteries. A peanut butter sandwich is also a good source of protein, B-vitamins, and vitamin E. In contrast, (for a cyclist,) meat takes much longer to digest while peanut butter can be made available for energy much more quickly and be digested faster instead of "hanging around" in your stomach. |

Yummy, but the bread is missing, which supplies an important protein balance. Why do people pay more for foods that really stink in delivering performance? :) |
