Post-ride recovery drinks

I am getting into riding and nutrition a lot more now than I used to in the past few years, so I'm asking another nutrition question:

What are some good post-ride recovery drinks?

RWTD 09-12-02 09:55 PM

I make my own shake comprised of two cups of water ,three scoops unflavored whey protein, three scoops whole uncooked rolled oats, one frozen banana one peach(you can rotate the fruits for variety)and either cream or coconut(fresh or shredded)to taste(if you like natural peanut butter substitute that).I drink this right out of the blender with a multi vitimin plus antioxidents plus a few fish oil and borage oil tablets to balance the fats .

Yummy! Bananas with fish oil! Recovery or retch?

I really like Cytomax for during and after exercise.. As to specific post recovery needs- I have always liked Muscle Recovery Bars or gels..

EnduroxR4 works real well for me. The diff between using and not using it post-ride is substantial.

Fish oil capsules are tasteless and help fight inflammation while bananas contain potassium so I would say recovery .In fact I just got back from a 140g mile ride and I think I will have a shake .

Mineral water usually serves me pretty well. Something I like to eat is sliced banana covered in home-grown passionfruit.

Chris.. You seem to have a Passion fruit fettish.. I am only familiar with it in Hawaii.. I had heard it to be very perishable..? Must be consumed immediately? I am curious about Passion fruit.. Loved the taste of fresh Passion fruit juice in Hawaii.
Do you like grow it on trees in your back yard and eat it fresh? I do not think I ever saw a fresh Passion fruit itself.. How do you eat them. Eat the fruit raw or what? Just curious..

Another vote for Endurox R4. Drink it w/in half an hour of finishing your ride. Steer clear of the lemon-lime. I like the fruit punch, haven't tried orange. It seems pretty expensive, but it's not so bad if you work out how many servings you get from a container. Performance almost always has it on sale. Also, if you go to the Endurox web-site, they almost always have a $2 or $5 rebate coupon.

Finally, Joe Friel has a recipe for a homebrew recovery drink in the April '02 Ultra-fit e-tips. Check the first article, "Quick Recovery."

Thanks for the reponses. I'll check out Endurox 4.

Hi: I drink "Accelerade" This works great for me. I buy it at GNC and it is $23.99 for a 2.2lb. can. (You get 28 servings) I buy orange flavor. I also eat a bowl of oatmeal with a cut up banana in in before I ride. :D

i've tried to remain a little skeptical of all the "nutition" hype these days, but...

from my own very-uncontrolled, non-scientific tests, i find Endurox R4 to be very helpful. i used it a while then quit, and now decided to use it again and i seem to notice better recover and less sore muscles...

it's expensive, so i only take it once or twice a week after my really hard rides.

Gatorade does it for me. I drink it during rides as well (one bottle of water and one of Gatorade).

April '02 Ultra-fit e-tips.

Weird, I always have a huge glass of skim milk and some cookies after long rides. I thought I was being bad (well, the cookies probably are bad). But I figured it's OK after throwing down some miles. Now I can legitimately call it "Recovery"? I sure am glad I got into this cycling stuff! :D Now if only there were a way to justify pizza and beer...

I've often wondered why these important nutritional supplements weren't available at the LBS:p

So the question becomes, is the post-ride Cherry Garcia for recovery, or is the ride an excuse for the Cherry Garcia?
