I am no longer overweight

According to the BMI. I know I know, don't take BMI too seriously.

Thanks! I was 173 at my heaviest, I know it's not much by some standards but I just did not feel good at all. I then went down to 167 and stayed there for about a year. About 2.5 months ago I got on the bike and started riding. This morning I was 154 which, at 5' 6" works out to a BMI of 24.9.

All thanks to the bike - see how important this machine is to everyone??
I lost 35 lbs because of the bike...

Wouldn't know where I'd be without it.

Congrats kuan!

I'm also 5' 6". Back in Feb I was 198. Today I'm 146. I'm actually finding it harder to stop losing that it was to start.

5'7 here and holding at 170. I haven't noticed any real weight loss yet but I'm hammering one race around our local lake of 10 miles and then hammering a 5 mile off road course. I think I'm just putting on some leg muscle at the moment. I hope to trim down to 160 by the spring. I lift a fair amount of weights also.

Congratulations. I too am around the same height (5'71/2") and am still overweight according to the BMI at 167, but am at 15% body fat according to caliper testing. I'm 54 and the recommended body fat for my age group and gender is 12-22%, so, by that standard, I'm not overweight. I'm still planning on losing another 8-10 pounds and, hopefully, will be slim and trim. I started weighing myself at 211, when I felt pretty sluggish and obese.

As far as biking and this forum, I couldn't have done it without something like this. I have been extremely inspired to keep it up and it has changed my life.

Yeah, c'mon, you're not "American fat" until you're past 250 and can barely walk. Why are you wasting our time with your piddling "European fat?"

Congrats!

How the heck did you lose that much weight in that little time? I was 195 in January and down to 160 right now but I've been at 160 for the past 2 months and am having a heck of a time loosing that last 20 pounds, trying to get to 140-145, I'm 5'7".

Motivation. On 2/17/05 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The Doctor told me she wanted to try to control it with diet and exercise (no meds) if possible. A week later my son & I met with a Diabetic Educator, who explained the importance of exercise in controlling diabetes. I had plans on buying an exercise bike (I did). My son opened his big mouth and said, "I'm gonna get him back on a bike this summer". He did. 1700 miles later...

I eat a lot more sensibly, watch fat and limit carbs. I've cut out soda altogether. during the week I eat basically the same breakfast and lunch. For dinner I am careful of portion size. When I want seconds, I have more salad. I DO NOT feel deprived.

...and I'm riding my bike. I started commuting in June. I wonder how long I'll last before I freeze (southern Maine). Hopefully I won't have to hang up the bike for long. Anyway, I still have the exercise bike.

Heh, heh... On 1-Jan. I was 245 lbs and at 5'5" I was certainly overweight by BMI standards. I was diagnosed with mild hypertension and it freaked me out a bit as my mum had died of an aneursym that was related to her hypertension. So my goal was to increase my cardiovascular fitness as measured by resting-heartrate, blood-pressure, VO2-max and recovery-rates from max. The weight-loss has been a nice side-effect that I couldn't care less about. Even today when I'm 180lbs, I'm still overweight. But I'm still losing it, hope to be down to 150 by the end of the year, then 145lbs by 1-Mar to being racing again.

You've reach an equilibrium point between your fitness-level, calories-in and calories-out. It's the "set-point" idea. One of those three factors must change in orderWeight-loss isn't doing the same workout over and over again, the training must change was fitness increases to generete further weight-loss. As you lose weight and get more fit, your workouts must increase in intensity and get harder and more strenuous to lose that next 10 pounds. The final 10 pounds will require working out much, much harder than the 1st 10 pounds; you'll need to be doing rides of 60-80 miles along with a day of sprints, a day of intervals, a day of hillclimbing each week.
