hip and glute pain
Hi. I'm having hip and glute pain in my right leg (only), so I thought I'd ask if anyone can offer advice about potential causes and remedies.
Glute
I feel this when I'm bending over, stretching to touch my toes. It seems very localized, around the area of the butt bone (ok, so I flunked out of med school. now you know...) that you can feel when pressing on the glute while bent over. Doesn't seem to affect me other than when I'm stretching.
Hip
This one is more problematic, as I feel it when ascending stairs or any time I'm pushing off (rising from a chair, pedaling hard while seated, etc.), so I tend to favor this leg and I feel it's affecting power delivery, pedal stroke, etc. It's a general soreness around the boney area of the hip you can feel when seated or when standing, pressing on the hip.
If I had to guess, I'd say I tried to push too big a gear while remaining seated while trying to climb a hill. That's the type of activity that would involve both of the affected areas. And the injury occurred prior to a formal bike fitting, during which my saddle was raised about one inch (!), so it occurred when I probably wasn't in the most efficient geometry imaginable.
I haven't been riding that often or that hard of late (too much rain and no trainer...yet), but neither problem seems to be abating (or lessening, or improving...).
Any thoughts about where to look or where to turn appreciated.
Thanks!
David

Me too. I can hardly move today.
Funny thing is I can ride, comfortably.
is it the dreaded IT band? that's what it looks to me.

For the record, Kirke and I are separated by a couple of hundred miles. Any similarity in symptoms is purely coincidental.
Now, what is the IT band?

I have just about recovered from very similar symptoms. I had been working at using bigger gears uphill when the problems started--particularly in the left glute for me--like a pulled muscle or maybe a nerve thing. I stayed off the bike for a few days. I have been commuting all week--spinning high gears uphill and am now feeling good again. I'm convinced I strained myself using too big a gear pushing uphill.

This site (found after a quick google) had some interesting information, and, on page 7, an illustration of a stretch that might be of use:

So, am I to understand that this will go away in time and is not the kiss of death?
Thanks!

I went to a sports medicine doctor for the same symptons. They told me weak hamstrings and tight hip flexors. It gets worse when I do a lot of hills and push hard sprinting, especially standing. The cure is lots of stretching and avoiding hills for a few days.

I rode this morning and felt no pain/discomfort at all.
In fact, sitting down is painful at the moment. Forget walking.
But I can ride with no problem.
This was suggested to me yesterday.
ICE. Advil and an anti-imflamatory.
