Florida Untraining

I'm being sent/summoned to Florida for a month.

At home I commute daily. 25k each way, with 1500 ft elevation in fairly steep hills. So i get a decent 1 hour workout twice a day. My eating habits are like a shark. I eat a LOT, all day long. My metabolism and calorie burning commute match my calorie intake nicely, i dont gain or lose weight.

I looked at renting a bike, but 400 bucks a month seems to be going rate, i can buy one and junk it for that. I probably could get a gym membership for a month, but i hate hate hate gyms.

Im ancient, with crappy knees, so running is pretty much out of the question. I doubt i can walk enough nightly to match what i currently cycle.

Any suggestions for lowering calorie intake in whats now an eating frenzy habit ? Is it a good idea to try to lower intake in the weeks prior ? Or should i just eat normal, walk/run as much as possible at night, and worry about any weight gain as something to lose once i get home again ?

Planes have bike racks on the wings ?

heheh its just a pain to ship via air, i dont have a crate or whatever is used to ship them. I also have to change planes to get there from here. So basically just a pain in butt.

As to my original post, i guess im just asking if there is a way to lower your metabolism knowing your exericise will be reduced for a length of time.

I think you mean to say "hunger" not "metabolism" in that last sentence right? Hmmm, well one of the things that causes hunger is low blood-sugar. If you don't exercise as much, you shouldn't feel as hungry. Try nibbling on a little bit of chocolate for snacks. There's a chemical in chocolate that blocks a hormone that causes hunger...

You don't want to miss out on some nice Florida cycling. The weather is perfect this time of year!

The way I see it, you have 2 choices:
Have your LBS box your bike and then pay the extra to have it put on the plane (about $150)

Or buy a Walmart POS hardtail MTB, for about $100, and beat it into the ground.

You could also have your LBS box it and then have FedEx or UPS ship it. They may be a good deal cheaper than the airlines.

Where in Florida? Check out Graigslist ... ie. 2003 OCR 3 in Tampa for $350 with Aero Bars and Look pedals. Buy used, sell it, cost may be a wash.

Will be Bonita Springs. Between Naples and Ft Myers on the gulf coast.

Think i'll just get a beater crap walmart bike or used one from pawn shop and wear it into ground, then leave it unlocked somewhere at end of trip, or hand it to some kid if its still usable

I can only imagine how many great bikes are sitting unused in Naples .... not sure of the cycling scene down there, but hike it up to St Petes (about an hour north) and you can always catch a good club ride any day of the week. www.stpetecycling.com

I know I took my bike on amtrak. Had my LBS box it, which cost about $40 and then Amtrak only cost 5$ to have the bike on the train. Just another option.
