The day after hard training session...quick shooting pain
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on physiology. I'm 44 and have been training with a heart rate monitor and am now starting to get in better shape...can go longer and harder on the trainer and rollers than I have ever been able to do. Yesterday I completed one of the Spinerval DVDs and kept pace the entire session, dripping sweat when finished and felt strong getting off the bike. I've also been doing some other exercise off the bike. I intentionally didn't max my heart rate too early (which I estimate is 178) so that I could finish the session strong. I was, however, at 170 (about 96% of max) for a longer period. T
Today I'm really drained. Around my heart area just seems stressed - minor shooting pain three or four times this morning. This afternoon I'm fine. Strange. I googled my symptoms and there were a couple of sites that indicated this was might be caused by some muscle strain in the rib cage area...it happens after a deep breath...and has nothing to do with heart.
Anyone ever experience anything like this?
Thanks.

Yeah. Largely when I comsume too much caffine. Like a can of JOLT Cola or three cans of Pepsi. I haven't overdone my exercise in years . I've also had similar pains from acid reflux, healing over nipple piercings, and an area where I had cracked two ribs years ago. Once I even thought the pain was a heart attack. Overnight in the hospital. After a very carefully monitored stress treadmill test I was cleared. Another medical mystery. A: do not get carried away exercising. B. What else had you done/eaten before and after the session? Mental notes. After I had wierd chest pains for months I finally figured out the caffine thing.

When I first started working out my deltoid area - with planks and push-ups, I experienced a little of this. I've learned it has to do with muscle imbalances. My right side is stronger than my left, so when I do exercises that even it out, my left side feels it.
When I started doing Ashtanga yoga, I had a little of this with the muscles around the lungs . . . due to deep breathing.
There was an old ER episode where a new intern was about to inject a healthy-looking patient in the chest with something that is supposed to jump-start the heart. The doctor said to the intern, 'what are you doing.' The intern said, 'I'm injecting him with (whatever it was called) since he's haviing a heart attack.' The doctor asked the patient, 'did you do any strength training or heavy lifting yesterday?" which he answered yes he had. The doctor then explained to the intern to always ask patients if they've worked out the deltoid muscles because they have similar symptoms to a heart attack.
I wonder if it could be a shoulder/deltoid muscle stress thing. Just a thought.
