If you are interested in biking to mitchell from asheville, shouldn't have any problems at this time. The road is still closed due to ice in the craggies pinnacle tunnel, once that is gone, the road should be open to at least Craggies Visitor center. We just need some consistent warm days and nights.
After reading all your posts about what gearing and all that, I suggest you just drive up here and do the climbing portion of the ride from either marion or asheville (fairly comparable) that way you can eliminate the guesswork of how hard it will be and not be relying on other peoples advice on what will work best for you.

Welcome back, you fat, stupid slob... (talking to myself, here...)
Let work, life, a little bit of weather, and some bike issues keep me off the bike more often than I've been on it...
Back in the groove now, and have ridden the last 5-days straight.... Feels great to be back.....

still have not done any serious or challenging climbs.....
am doing my 22-mile 'mini-assault' every day without fail, and there are some good (though short) climbs on emma cudd and goldmine, but nothing like i need to be doing...
hopefully the life/work schedule will relax a little and i'll be able to check off some of those climbs on ranzak's post...
