No sex for Sterling Moss

Sterling Moss, the great British Formula 1/sports car driver, advocated not having sex the night before a big race. But I can't remember his reason why. Sterling had some unusual quirks. He took all his silver trophies, had them melted down, and made a heated, silver toilet seat out of them.

Stirling is a typical British eccentric. He was the original `I'll do it my way ' He currently drives around on a 40mph scooter and yet probably has the pick of a few nice motors. Stirling and Enery Cooper are 2 of this countries all time sporting greats.

I never considered that fight a loss really. Enery had him good and proper on the canvas out for the count. And that was when Cassius was in his prime!.
I reckon we had ourselves our first british world heavyweight champion that day and no one will persuade me otherwise.

Hey I just re-read your post. You were actually there!?......wow I have been looking for a vhs copy of the fight for over 20 years

I think your probably right on both counts. Enery was never quite the same after and his eyebrows were just about finished anyway. For a gentle giant he certainly had the killer instinct. Unlike so many of our other HW fighters ie Bugner etc.
Re the vhs I guess you are right but I cannot believe somone hasn't put it onto vhs yet with all the other memorable fights.

Yea he is still alive and looks pretty good for his age.
He was on the tv just the other day with a new advert for something or other. The trouble is all the 30 year olds or younger say `enery who?' so I can't see him being a very effective marketing tool anymore.

Do you remember the aftershave advert for Brut? Enery had to say ` Splash it on all over' I thought he looked and sounded so pathetic it was a tragic way to end such a fantastic carreer to be reduced to doing embarrasing adverts
I think his brother or father was the grocer. You can't tell the 2 brothers apart and I think Enerys brother boxed too.

yea there were quite a few of those in that era. After Enery we had no one of consequence coming through in the heavy weight division for many years. Even Bruno was a joke.

In the past, wasn't abstinence in preparation for a major event pretty common? It was felt that sex weakened or cause the participant to loose his edge.

yep I think it was generally thought that a frustrated sex drive would give you more energy and drive .
Glad I'm not a top sportsman. I could give up sex occasionally but I could never stop eating Yea!

Indeed! Irritability and a grumpy disposition should not be mistaken for energy and drive.

PS. I get it! Enery! as in Enery the VIII!

OTOH, Paul Hunter, after a bad session at the Embassy a year or two ago, went to the hotel and snogged his girlfriend between sets. He then went back to the Crucible and won his match.

To each his own, I guess.

Cheers...Gary

They used to joke that Sean Kelly wouldn't have sex in the week before a race, but that as he raced every week, he was married for 4 years before he slept with his wife!
