Been riding for little over a year and tonight for the first time I got leg cramps. They were right smack dab in the middle of my calf on left leg (then right leg at very end near home). Kind of startled me....not something I relished when 8 miles away from house.

Is this normal? Any idea on what may have caused it? How to help ensure it doesn't happen again?

Dehydration and / or low electrolytes are common causes of leg cramps. what and how much did you eat and drink in the several hours prior to the cramps? what was the temperature and humidity?

I was thinking that, but was drinking good during the ride.

Prior to ride....at work all day.......maybe did not drink a whole lot. A friend mentioned she had cramps and was told to take magnesium.

Chris
Thanks for the info. I get clamps quite often and your comment makes sense. I don't drink whole lot of water. I'll try drinking more water and see how it works.

I cramp on occasion. I usually notice that my seat has worked it's way too low, and I can't get enough extension in my leg and it will cramp right up if i don't stand up and stretch or stop and fix the seat.

I had just got my bike back from the shop....I "thought" I had my seat at lowest position, but don't remember for sure. During riding though....I also noticed it felt like my legs was getting fully extended. I'll look at that closer.

I got cramps yesterday for the first time in many years.
Despite all of the fluids I did, I pushed much harder than usual and spent twice as much time up and down the bridges. Gatorade, banana.
Took it easy last nite but still had kind of weak legs this morning.
Hot and humid here as well.

Hey King Termite,
If you just recently had the seat position changed, that could give you cramps just for the reason that you are using your muscles a bit differently.

manual_override nailed it....the bike shop lowered the seat when they worked on it and I didn't notice it. I realized, after the comment, the next ride that my legs weren't fully extending.

I've put seat up a bit and haven't had any issues since, so far.
