Cardio, calories, and metabolism

A personal trainer told me that with cardio excersize, you stop burning calories as soon as you stop the excersize. This is contrary to what I thought. Is this true?

Are there any good online sources for information about how metabolism works that you guys know off the top of your head? I thought that doing regular cardio raised your metabolism significantly to the point where you burn more calories at rest. I know you do with weight training, but was I believing in myths with the cardio thing?

Nope, your HR remains elevated at least 30 mins after cardio. Take your HR after cardio and see for yourself.

Here's a good source. It's basically an on-line book written by a physicians who is also a cyclist. There are a lot of references as well. You may have to dig to find your specific answers.

In general, yes, you do get increased benefit from exercise. Your BMR will increase post-exercise, and can remain elevated for up to several hours leading to additional caloric burn, though not a dramatic amount (the author in the link I provided suggested 15 extra calories for every 100 you burn while exercising). A lot depends on how often you exercise, how hard you exercise, and your body composition. Your heart rate, however, should not be elevated for an extended period post-exercise.

you're altering metabolic pathways with cardio. likewise, you're altering met pathways as a compensatory response post-cardio bout too (ie increasing). probably not to the extent of significant lean mass increases though. however, it is so variable. for instance, are we talking the "ave" exerciser who is pretty good about going to the health club and doing 30-60min of cardio? or the folks who are very into it and doing bouts that last for hours??

How elevated are you talking about? How many bpm? My understanding is that the fitter you are, the faster it returns to normal. A significantly raised heartrate post exercise often indicates overtraining.

I think I'd have to call BS on your personal trainer.

Yes, a HR that doesn't drop down near normal after exercise means something is wrong (overtraining, body isn't used to exercise, etc.)

However, if your basal metabloic rate is higher after exercise (which it is, to varying degrees) your HR must also be elevated. I usualy find about a 3-4 bpm increase for 2-3 hours after a good ride. Although this could also me in part in response to the non-cardio aspects of a ride.

Cardio exercise keeps you burning calories after exercise is over, but at a much lower level than say intesne weight lifting.

Is metabolism raised after exercise because your body is repairing any muscle, converting chemicals and the like?

And is the heart rate raised afterwords because you heart is pumping out accumulated toxins and the like, or is it some sort of combination?
