Whoa!!!
This past Wenesday I tried something different. I drank half a SOBE Banana-Strawberry flavored Fuel drink, and then half a bottle of water to wash it down( all this was abnout 20 minutes before riding) and then right before we started out I took a little bite of PowerGel. Man, I have never ridden like I did that night. I was going strong the whole time, even when I was breathing hard I had the engery to keep going. I was wowed. I think part of it was my clipless shoes. But I never thought the Fuel drinks worked, they usually give me stomach cramps, but not the SOBE stuff.

Hmm, might have to give that a try. I used to drink SOBE drinks at the office sometimes, but I don't think any of them had the word "Fuel" in the name. Maybe that's newer. The ones I tried tasted great.

Yeah, I was kinda worried, it had Ginseg and some other wierd stuff that my sister said sounded fake, but who knows. I also read in a news mag the herbal stuff can be bad.

I tend to stick to fruit juice and stuff like that myself. Sports drinks are OK occasionally, but I get a bit worried about all the chemicals in them if you have them too often. Plus my weak as p*ss budget can't sustain too many of them anyway.

Astragalus - 50MG
Yerba Mate - 50MG
So whats the deal with herbal stimulants? Good / Bad?

I have no idea. They can be bad if you are on RX meds. I think Pete knows more about it than I.

Dirtgrinder, I watched The Jerk just the other day--again! (Your signature quote about the phonebook!)
I also love the lines: "St. Louis?" "No, Navan Johnson..."
OK, I'm easy to amuse. But not very often.

DG, I think that was Kurt Kobain from Nirvana that said that in his letter before comitting suicide. But who cares
Ba-dg-er, I tried Redbull and I can't say I liked it, that would be a lie.

It was way to sweet, and it tasted like cherry flavored medicine. But that is just me.

Nothing wrong with Yerba Mate. I believe it is basically another form of caffeine, which is present in more herbal forms than you would imagine, including the coffee bean, cola nut, tea leaf and
guarana. Nothing fancy.
Just beware of Ma-Huang, or "Chinese Ephedra." Probably won't hurt you, but you should know it is the first used form of stimulant from the amphetamine family, before the wonders of chemistry came up with all the other forms.
Like Fubar said, it's the drug interactions and pre-existing health conditions that pose problems. And in normally healthy individuals, it can raise blood pressure and heart rate, not unlike
nicotine.

50 mg of yerba mate sounds like a token gesture to me. It might be like a sip of a cola drink. Same with the ginseng--which is also probably of very low quality, otherwise the drink would be too expensive to produce. (There are several kinds of ginseng, and it's lawful to call any of them just "ginseng," so producers get by with a lot of skullduggery there.)
If you ever drink cola drinks, they probably raise your heart rate far more than this SOBE drink would do, to judge from what they say is in it.
The only way you can really know if it's safe is if McDonald's starts to serve it. :
