Baffeled by pain in one leg?

I hope someone has some suggestions.

I have been riding for 5 years, but this spring I started having pain in my right leg. It starts on the out side of the leg, just behind the knee. Feels sorta like a cramp, but seems just to tighten up. It is more pronunced the harder I push and usually comes into play after 25-30 miles. It moves up my leg twards the outside of my hip and into my back. On hard rides it gets unbearable and I have to slow or stop.
Could this be an overuse injury from training too hard in the spring that I haven't rested? Or do I need to strech a specefic muscle group?
Ideas??

Sounds like it's possibly the same IT band issue I've had for over a year.

It used to appear like clockwork at about 25 miles, but with regular stretching,

and strap,

it now doesn't appear until 75 miles.

Good luck.

I found that my one leg was always having pain. What I discovered is that when I am coasting I support all my weight on the same leg 100% of the time. I now make an effort to use the other leg when I can. Sounds funny, but I have more control of the bike using my dominant leg to support most of my weight so it’s about 60/40. Look at your cleats on your shoes. Mine has a yellow wear indicator. One looks like new and on my dominant leg the cleat needs replaced. I always use the same leg to stop. This little change in the way I ride fixed my leg pain issue.

Also get checked out to make sure you aren't pinching a nerve in your back. I get similar symptoms when my sciatic nerve gets inflamed.

Thank's for the replys, the IT band links where very helpful.

After making the OP, and reading the IT stuff, I noticed that the tightness actually starts from the inside upper part of the knee. I have realy started working on my hamstings and IT streaches and it is indeed getting better. I have also backed off on the amount of intense riding I was doing. Thanks!
