I just bought a foam roller that is 6"x18". The IT Band is hard to stretch, but the roller exercise for ITB seems very effective.

I use a foam roller. Work well for getting the knots in the muscles relaxed.

Foam roller on the IT band hurts so good.....

You lie on your side with it underneath, then propel your body forward and back, such that the IT band is rolled out like some cheap pizza dough.

Here's the best article I've seen on the rollers. Definately worth every penny.

Are you rolling on the actual area of pain (along the side if the knee) or higher up the side of the thigh where the main part of the IT band is?

Also, can someone link to a place where these foam rollers can be purchased? Thanks.

I used them to stretch the IT band, which helped alleviate my knee problem. So, I was rolling up and down the outside of the thigh. My knee problem was not on the outside of the knee. The main treatment was stretching and strengthening the quads.

I googled "physical therapy equipment" and found:

Or, I'd call a local physical therapist's office and ask where they get theirs.
