Metabolism

I'm currently into reading a book on metabolism and found that the average resting metabolic rate is about 10 times your weight in pounds. Example - I weigh 160 lbs thus making my RMR 1600 calories a day. To me, this seems rather low. Anyone have any experience with this?

Also, in the same book it reads that pastas and bagels have a high glycemic load containing refined carbs whereas I always thought that these were a low glycemic food containing complex carbs??? Anyone?

I think for the pasta and bagels, it would depend on if it was white flour or whole wheat used. The best way to figure out your RMR is to weigh yourself and track your Calories. If the scale isn't changing, that is your Caloric intake for maintenance. If that was true, I would have to eat 1300 Cal, which is way too low!

there are a few BMR calculators online.. You can get a good baseline for calories per day.. It is based on age, weight, height.. This baseline is pretty accurate for days I do not ride or exercise.. For some 3+ hour rides I can easily burn 3000 calories.. On those days my Calorie intake is going to be much different than on an recovery day..
