Avocado

Should we be eating avocados instead of bannanas? They have 60% more potassium. What are the overall positives/ negatives of including avocado regularly in a training diet?

Definitely keep an eye on overall fat intake if consuming lots of this food.

As I understand it, the oil -fat- in avocados is nearly all monounsaturated, like olive oil.
So, it might be "good" fat but there are still the calories to consider.
Avocados are "good" food

Avocados are probably much better for you than olive oil, mainly because you can trust them. About 50% of the olive oil sold is fake, and there is absolutely no regulation of it to prevent this fraud. At least with an avocado, you know what you're eating.

You obviously haven't had a counterfeit avocado.

Well, in general, adding vegetables is a good thing. Avocados are fairly high in fat, but if you're training it's unlikely to be an issue.

They do tend to get messy in a jersey pocket...

50%? Where did you get that figure? Yes, there has been fraud with OO, but how this translates into what you are getting at the store is not so clear.

Locally there are two growers/processors/sellers of OO so I know what I am getting fortunately. I've visted one of their farms.

Bananas or Avocados?

Which one taste better when it comes back up? Knowing that is the answer to your question.

Now that's a stat that needs some evidence! it is possible for olive oil to be adulterated, but what exactly do you mean by 'fake'? made from benzene and coal tar? or simply substituted with peanut oil or mustard oil? those are two very different things, healthwise.

There most definitely is regulation to prevent this: it's called "labelling laws"... look for bottles labeled "100% extra virgin olive oil", and only ever buy that. that is the first press of the olives, and that's the best part. cheaper stuff that is not virgin oil is often heat pressed or solvent extracted to get more oil from the fruit, but it's still olive oil in the broadest sense. but only the extra virgin oil is recommended by health pros and serious cooks. and the greener the oil is, the better, IMHO. of course, you pay for quality, but i don't let my dog drink the stuff for 20c a bottle, and nor should you.

another tip: don't buy too much at once. only buy enough to use in less than a couple of months, as it oxidises once opened and becomes rancid, like butter.

+1 on the farmers market. Big shiny green avocados that weigh like 5lbs and are pretty much free. I'll take that over 2 for $4 at Kroger any day.

on the convenience factor

You could freeze it & eat it w/ a spoon. Should be thawed & nicely chill by the time you're ready to eat it...Or make little green popsicles

To freeze avocado, remove the skin. Pit and purée the flesh with ½ tablespoon (7mL) of lemon/lime juice per avocado. Pack in an airtight container and freeze for up to five months. Avocado slices and halves do NOT freeze well. Don't cook as they become bitter when heated.

I went to a local store for a gallon of pure virgin olive oil.....
The price was up to 33.00 a gallon....
I said to the owner:...Why is the price so high for olive oil?

He answered by explaining how the war in Iraq is causing the price of oil to skyrocket.

What an idiot.
