Check through the threads in this forum. You'll find several about this very subject.

Do a search under IowaParamedic. He did a weight loss thread in the Training and Nutrition section, and he successfully dropped quite a few pounds.

Myself, I'm still losing- dropped 19 pounds so far, and I have 15- 20 pounds to go.

No pics. Who the heck takes pics of themselves when they're fat??!! ;)

Biking is great for body conditioning...not to mention how fun it is! I've been going to the gym for the last couple of years for lifting weights and such, and been using the bike for cardial which in turn has helped me decrease my fat %'s.....I started riding earlier this year to give me extra conditioning and have dropped my body fat by 3% over the last 6 months while only losing around a lb a month, which is great for me as I was only wanting to drop around 8 lbs or so. How much weight are you trying to lose? Be careful and try to keep your monthly weightloss to a minimal as you don't want to lose too much muscle and it makes it easier to maintain your weight over the long run. Losing more than 3 lbs a week can be bad if you aren't up on nutrition, not to mentention how bad it can be if you are a competitive rider.

Best of luck to you!!

I would strongly recommend "Body For Life" - there is a thread on this topic in this forum.

I started in May, 2003 at 254 lbs, high BP, high cholesterol and out of control blood sugars. I now weight 225 and am headed lower. My goal is 185. I now have a normal BP, cholesterol, blood sugar. I feel better and I LIKE exercise for the first time in my life. For me it is about the bike. The bike has given me years of my life back that I was afraid I was going to lose to diabetes. I took this photo yesterday to send to my sister. I have a before photo that I'd rather forget. This can be my before photo in a few months when I reach my target weight.

PS. I ride a cheap bike daily (15-25 miles) and I am perfectly happy with it.

last summer i started to bike to lose weight. i started in july and biked just about everyday till october when i started to get too cold to bike.

I lost about 30 lbs in that time along with dieting. I want from a size 40 waist to a 36. During the winter months, i gained some back b/c it was a hard transition b/w biking and going to the gym. i must have gained back at least 10.

I now work out 5 days a week doing cardio. I have been able to keep my weight btw 190-195 for the last 8 months. Im trying to lose more but i guess dorm food gets to me. I still eat like crap, but i havent gone over 195 since january.

I started biking seriously about 1 month ago to get back into shape. Being a police officer requires you to be in shape because you never know when you will need it. I also got tired of hearing people say, "Man you've gained some weight"! When I was in rookie school I was known as the little terminator. Ranked 5th out of 47 people in the fitness. After you get married and have kids you kinda tend to let it slip away. Right now I am 5'10" and weighing around 200lbs. My ideal weight is 175lbs. If I can just get rid of this small spair tire I will be happy. Take care!!!!

...another police officer. I was transferred this past June to a uniform position after about nine years in plain clothes. The lifestyle had taken its toll but I'm working my way down. I'm the same height as coppilot but had a little more fun apparently. 234 lbs about a month before I switched jobs and 208 about a week ago.
I think you'll find that the less you worry about the weight loss and the more you concentrate on enjoying the exercise, the easier the loss will become.
I commute for my four day rotation (about 150 k or 90 miles) and then have three days off. I cycle for two of them and put on about 70 k (45 miles). My only fear is that the weather will turn and I won't do enough to keep the pounds coming off.
Don't know about you but I try and take a different route whenever I can to avoid boredom. My route to work is pretty fixed (and dark, like coppilot I leave the house at about 4 am) so I try and mix it up whenever I can.
