Polar S720i resetting the darn odometer ???
I recently purchased this HRM. Thus far I'm impressed with the performance and software. However, there is one quirk that I have not been able to figure out. That has to do with the milage measurement. It seems this unit only has an odometer that logs total cumulative miles. If there is a reset feature I can't seem to find the darn thing. I would like to be able to see the miles I have ridden for a given ride without having to remember the odometer reading at the start of the ride and then doing mental subtraction each time someone ask me, "how far have we gone?"
The instrustion manual shows how to delete files (page D74) and individual record data (page D75). I'm I missing something? I reset the files and set cumulative counts to zero but still get a cumulative odometer reading at the start of the next ride. Also, there also does not appear any way to reset the max speed, max cad, and max alt.
I appreciate any input anyone may have in shedding some light on this. Thanks

You dont have to or want to reset the odometer. Recall the last file and use the total ride distance from it. For 90% of my rides i keep it set to BASICUSE. That gives me all the pertinant data i need. I try to be carefull not to reset the file during a ride. Not hard to do if i accidentally push the STOP button twice. When you recall the FILE the total ride distance of just that ride is recorded. The trick is to go to RECORDS and reset the total ride time, max speed, max alt, Kcals, etc etc before every new ride. Its not the same as total exercise time. I could care less about total exercise time because the darn thing records the avg speed based on total ride time.
Heres the trick to resetting those things you dont seem to be able to like max cad, alt & speed.
Go to FILE - push start button
Use scroll button to cycle to RECORDS
Push start button
Scroll thru each item you wish to reset
Push the Start button.
the word RESET will flash at the top and show an arrow pointing at the scroll button.
Push both scroll buttons at the same time and hold.
The item will blink and eventually reset the value to zero.
Move on to the next item to be reset.
Dont bother reseting the odometer, its not necessary if you keep your ride files straight. I record my data in Bike Journal and delete all files i dont need.

Thanks Fatguyracer, I'll change the files to BASICUSE and see if that makes any difference. When you begin your ride do you push the start button or just rely on the speed sensor to start the recording?

The Polar 720i has both a cumulative odometer and a trip mileage reading. I reset the odometer at the beginning of the year, and I reset the trip reading for every ride.
Trip mileage is displayed on the upper display when in "record" mode. To reset it:
1. press the red button to enter "record" mode.
2. repeatedly press the upper right button until "Trip" appears on the upper display.
3. press and hold the upper left button until "Trip" mileage is cleared.
Note that you can reset the trip mileage at any time, not just at the beginning of a ride.

Helo. Why shouldnt we reset the odometer? There is no reason to buy a new polarunit just because of buying a new bike? I would very much like to reset the odometer telling me how much my bike have been used, not the clock. Ok so what do I need to do for reseting the clock folks?

If you have the Options/Bike Set set for a bike, the automatic start/stop will function, so you only have to hit the Start button before the ride to turn the unit on. If you leave the unit unattended for too long (how long depends on the year of manufacture), it will turn itself off and need to be restarted. Many people put the unit on their wrist before going in for a lunch stop.
I also reset all the records at the start of each training year. How to reset the cumulatives has been explained here. To reset the maxumims, get the maximum on screen and then push and hold the upper left button, like you do to reset the trip odometer. When you see "Reset Value", push the Start button. Or better yet, RTFM.

I have the 725x, and I'm assuming the software is the same as yours. The way to reset the odometer is to connect the wrist unit to the software, click on the "Run/Bike" tab, and you'll see a button marked "Odometer." Click on that, and enter whatever number you like.
