Hypnotherapy for weight control
Anybody here have any experience or knowledge with hypnotherapy for the purpose of weight loss/control? Does it really work or is it a hoax?
For the most part I eat a healthy diet. Lean meats, veggies, fruits, etc. I don't do caffeine, alcohol, drugs, or smoke. But I have one weakness/addiction that I just haven't been able to overcome. Donuts! I previously lost 67 Lbs on Weight Watchers and kept it off for nearly two years. Lately though I've been struggling with stress eating at work and have been gaining back weight that I worked so hard to loose. Even though I've put over 4000 miles on my bike in the last year I'm still gaining weight. The main source of temptation is that just outside my office door is the snack bar for my building. They cook all kinds of greasy unhealthy food there and I have done well not to eat it. However the one thing they have that I can't seem to stay away from are the fresh bakery donuts! Every time I leave or enter my office I have to walk through the snack bar. All day long I smell their food. Due to the servers I babysit and the fact that there are no other choices for my office location I am stuck with this daily distraction/temptation. If I could afford to quit my job I would just to get away from this unhealthy environment but I can't. So I must continue to try to find away to stay away from the unhealthy stuff. It would seem that if I could be hypnotized to not want to eat donuts the problem would be solved. Which brings me back to my question does hypnotherapy really work for weight control? Any help would be appreciated. |
I've seen hypnotists at work. He or she would probably take your weakness, doughnuts or whatever, and have you get sick to your stomach everytime you smell a doughnut. So you won't get hypnotized to loose weight per say, but rather something more specific. (One very funny example at this performance I saw, a man was hypnotized so that his legs would turn to Jello fpr 2 seconds and he'd fall over everytime he heard "Chicago.") At least that's how I've seen it done.
Now not everyone can get into the spell. It works for some and not for others. The hypnotist I saw would call 20 volunteers from the audience. But the audience could go along too. Some people on stage weren't under the spell, so that went back to their seats, but some people in the audience were hypnotized. I didn't get hypnotized even though I tried to be. But do you think that getting doughnuts out of your diet completly is the answer? Moderation does not work? How many doughnuts are you eating per day/week? |
Man you are addicted, check out your username. Krispy? as in Krispy Kreme? :)

I know the fat content, the calories, and even how many Weight Watcher's points each of them are worth (if I were still counting points) but I still end up eating them anyway. :( |

A big factor in this is work related stress. I don't crave donuts on the weekends or from any other donut place, it's only when I'm at work. In the weeks that I have been able to go without eating them I usually loose 5 to 10 Lbs. But then the work stress builds back up and I fall off the wagon and start in on the donuts again. If it were not for my cycling I would probably weigh 350 -400 Lbs like most of the other employees in the building. And no that is not an exaggeration. I've never worked around so many obese people before I came here! :( |
Krispy,
The whole hypnosis thing, if done correctly can be quite helpful. I doubt a good hypnotist would have you get sick every time you smelled a doughnut. They would however give you a suggestion similiar to having to protect your body and that Doughnuts are not good for your body, and a trigger for that thought, and YOU would be in control of the trigger. It isn't the "you are a duck" kind of hype, not if done correctly and by a competent hypnotist. I used to work with a shrink who used hypnosis on psych patients to surprizingly good results. If you are going to do the hpnosis route, make sure you find a reputable hypnotist. How bout this, you take some alternative snack in with you, one that both satisfies and is a bit more healthy for you (fruit, veggies etc.) (this said as I sit here chowing down on biltong). When the urge/desire/need strikes you eat the alternative. Marty |

When the urge/desire/need strikes you eat the alternative. As far as the bringing my own snacks goes, I've been doing that for years. That's how I avoid eating the greasy food from the snack bar. I bring all of my veggies, fruits and nuts to snack on as well as my lunch (usually grilled buffalo or chicken and a mixed green salad). On the days that I fall off the wagon and go for the donuts I still eat my healthy food but by then the damage is already done. I think I may start looking for a reputable hypnotist to see what all is involved. Do you have any suggestions for determining who is qualified? Thanks |

I have a much simpler solution for you, and it doesn't involve hypnosis:
Eat the donuts... Really eat lots of them. In fact eat nothing else. Start with a dozen for breakfast. Keep a box by the desk for snacking. Eat donut holes for lunch. Have a handful of eclairs for dinner. You must eat only donuts. No meat, no vegetables, no fruit, no bread. Only donuts, and lots of them. I figure in about 2-3 weeks you will be cured. Dan |
even how many Weight Watcher's points each of them are worth (if I were still counting points) but I still end up eating them anyway. Go back to Weight Watchers. At LEAST go back to counting points. Successful Lifetime members are the ones that keep going to meetings and continue following the program even after they are "done" loosing thier weight, as if one could ever really be "done". When you have to account for the "points" you'll soon decide that those evil little round demon seeds are not worth the price. 5 points...EACH!!!??? No way. 15 points a day for doughnuts? You'll stop soon enough. |

Biltong is the south african equivilant of Beef Jerky, only way better! and the really good stuff is game (kudu, bloesbok springbok) not beef. Impossible to find here in the U.S. (I'm thinking of Buffalo Biltong) and illegal to bring in from South Africa, the utlimate forbidden pleasure! Marty |
Krispy, go on over to the snack bar and ask them to refuse to ever again sell you any donuts.

Back when I first got serious about loosing weight the owner of the snack bar would make comments about how he missed my business as I waked by. One day he even followed me into my office and tried to give me a handful of free candy bars to try to entice me to come back! It backfired because it pissed me off to the point that I determined I wasn't going to do any more business with him. I stayed away until he sold the snack bar to someone else. |
Hello, my name is Krispy. It has been 5 days since my last doughnut.... ;)
|
Krispy, I know what you mean. I am on a weight reduction plan at the moment and I was resisting cravings pretty well until.........yesterday........, a co-worker brought in some still warm, fresh doughnuts......I had to tear myself away and rush out of the room to keep from gobbling down two...or more.
I feel for you buddy. Hang in there! |
It is the First one that kills you!! :D
I am on Weight watchers and have lost 40lbs... the other day when we moved I bought 3 dozen doughnuts to feed my friends for helping I smelled them in the car and thought hmmmmm 1 wont hurt as I will work it off.....:D :D :D I ATE 3 in about 8 mins that it took to get home, and glaze all over my face and hair and my wife just died laughing at me. DOnt eat the First one! CHaz |

DOnt eat the First one! I can't help with the hypnotherapy stuff - don't know much about it's success or failure, and haven't heard much either way. What has helped for me is having a good supply of microwave popcorn and trailmix bars at my desk. Every time someone brings in something evil and tasty like doughnuts or cake, I have a trailmix bar (very filling!) or a bag of popcorn instead. I end up feeling satisfied and have had my 'treat'. It's all in how you view the snacks in your desk - are they poor substitutes for the real thing that you eat because you should, or tasty morsels in themselves that you enjoy eating! |
