Flat tires on a trainer ??

I have now had several flat tires recently - and my bike is on a trainer for the winter !!

What's up with that?? Is there a problem with how I've adjusted the trainer (not tight enough??), or should I be using different tubes/tires for this?

I am using Armadillo tires, and just stock Performance tubes.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Road tires get very hot on a trainer, which can be a problem for tubes.
That's why they make those trainer-specific tires.

I only ride on rollers and not a trainer, but I have almost 1000 miles on my rollers without any problems with anything and my tires will need replaced when I get good enough weather to ride outside again.

This should never happen. There is something wrong that is causing these.

Have you inspected the tubes that have been punctured? Is the puncture rim-side or tire-side? Is it always in the same place?

My guess is either you have piece of something stuck in your tire that is repeatedly causing flats, or your rim tape is not properly installed.

This is easy, you're cursed. Even with armadillo tires you're doomed to get flat tires, even inside.

Probably something more simple like what nafun suggested, but you never know.

+1

I recently blew a tube while mid-way through a 2-hr trainer ride. Quickly hopped-off, grabbed a spare tube, installed, remounted wheel and continued for the next hour. That night at 4am while sleeping, I thought I heard a tire pop. But, I could have been dreaming, too. When I woke-up and checked my rear wheel, sure enough. Turns-out, the tape had moved exposing a spoke hole, which cut the tube in the same spot on both tubes. Doh!

Problem identified

Thanks nafun - you're analysis was spot on. After the latest incident I inspected the inside of the tire carefully and discovered a small sharp object embedded. I assume it came through the tire and then the portion outside the tire got broken off. There was no indication at all on the outer part of the tire.

Removed that, and have not had a problem in several "rides". No doubt that was it.

Many thanks to all for your interest.
