New year, new goals and a place to record them.
Just a note to see if anyone else is using the Bike Journnal web site?
It is really cool. You can post your rides and set goals and it tracks all kinds of stats for you. It is a great tool. Don't forget to select club affiliation. You will find Bikeforums Team listed there.

I made a spreadsheet for myself, which works pretty well. It has almost everything that those two sites have, but I don't have a HRM yet, so I can't have that info on there. I like bkiejournal, because it ranks all the users. I would actually be top 5 in ride time for December. As of right now, I'm at 53 hours and 42 minutes. Go me!

bicyclejournal.com
More specific for cycling at least for tracking miles and compeating against others (for distance). Better "cycling community"
fitday.com
Better overall program. More complex but very powerful esp if you are trying to track the food you eat and ect al in minute detail...
bicyclejournal allows you to compare some of your stats against others... Fitday only allows you to make your journal public (so people will know how fat and lazy you are?
I must say that I favor the bike-savvy of bicyclejournal however fitday has a lot of bells and whistles that I wish bicyclejournal had!

Back to the goals...
I will be where I want to be as far as health, my physical appearance, and ready for a new year of racing by May of 2004. Also some goals that are irrelevant to cycling. Good luck to everyone with their New Year of goals!

Why not here
As far as posting your weight loss goals and progress. Wouldn't it be just as easy to do on one of these threads. I've seen it on other forums and it seems like a good idea for accountability with people who have similar goals as yourself. Kind of like a weight watchers weigh in. Personally I am 260 pounds right now, (6'4"), and my goal is to be 230 by July 1st 2004. To get there, I would have to lose approximately 1.15 pounds per week. Quite attainable I think. I will use healthy eating and alot of biking to attain this goal, hopefully 100 miles per week, (alot for me). I have a fairly nice mountain bike with knobby tires and I will be doing mostly road riding. Is it worth putting on slicks. The reason I don't really want to is because I still do some off road stuff and do not really want to have to change tires every time I go out.

Depends on the degree of what you consider "off road" ..
I am on Conti Top Touring 2000, exellant "road" tyres for using on a Mtb/hybrid bike, they also grip sufficently to allow me to cycle the old Rail tracks with their cinder/clinker surface.

Just ride.
I've recorded stats on web-sites for 2 years now. One didn't really let me record much, the other (bikeprolog) went heywire for a while mid-year, and still doesn't give decent access to recorded data. I will say that having rider mileages posted helped push me to keep grinding out miles even though it meant trainer time or riding in pretty chilly weather. I'm going to do a spreadsheet this year... access is easy, I can add any info or calcs I want (like miles completed in any time span... rather than just year-to-date and weekly totals). I also want special fields for maintenance (what done at what mileage), bike fit adjustments, etc. all in separate categories so they're easy to spot and review.

It was recently given a very favorable review on the roadbikerider.com web site by cycling author Fred Matheny. You can download a free, fully function, 45-day trial version from the web site, and test ride it to see if it meets your needs.
