training for 100 mile mtn ride?
I am getting ready to do my first 100 mile ride with alot of climbing. It is the assault on Mt. Mitchell ride in NC on Monday June 9th. I ride locally on mostly flat terrain but with quite a bit of head wind at times. My question is how much training can I get away with this Saturday and Sunday without hurting performance. I have found an area around Gaston Lake I can get around 3000 feet of decent climbs over 55 miles. I need to work some more on pacing myself and getting comfortable on the hills. The mitchell ride is a little over 10,000 feet in 103 miles. I was considering doing about 70 miles on Sat and 50 miles on Sun. holding my heart rate under 80% at all times and generally under 75% most of the time and work on form and efficiency. Then I was going to hold my rides during the week to easy rides of under 20 miles at 65% or less with a few 3 to 4 minute intervals to keep the blood flowing leading up to the Monday event. I generally ride 60 to 100 miles per week over the last 4 months. Is this OK, to much, or not enough?
