Looking for hardware and software for winter training

I need something to interface with my laptop to give me a real time datastream on HR, blood O2 saturation and respiration rate/volume while on the trainer. Does anyone know what's available out there?

Unfortunately lab grade stuff for this is prohibitively expensive.

You should be able to train just as effectively with post-ride PC upload; relying on the display for real-time data. Pulse oximeters with no PC upload go for cheap. As for ventilation, athlete and observer ratings are your best bet.

Do you already have a way to measure power? If not a power meter of some sort, or ideally a ergometer, should make this list. The ability to do incremental (or ramp) exercise capacity tests, and exercise prescriptions based thereon, is a sweeter cherry than those mentioned.

I think this product is closest to fitting your wants, outside of a high budget lab. I wouldn't buy it.

Excellent! Thanks much!

Yeah, I'm going to be doing some rigidly structured training this winter.....I'll be my own lab rat, so to speak.

Good suggestions on the budget methods as well. Wattage, I can figure based off of the HR, as well.

The Canadian company Enthalpic recommended is excellent- the place where I work uses their products, but it's really friggin expensive.

If you're looking for all that good stuff anyway, maybe a Monarch cycle ergometer would work for you. You'll have to up your budget, but it may do the trick for you.

You can also go for the PowerTap SL. It's within your price range and gives you som measureable results you can work to improve your performance in the off season. I suppose if you really want to be a geek about it, you can also get rollers. Between the rollers and the PowerTap, you should be plenty distracted from sitting in one space in your living room and staring at four walls.

Look,
tell me to buzz off if I get out of line here. You wouldn't exactly be the first.
But I utterly fail to see the point. I think a Powertap would make sense. You can use it to track your progress.

But you are going to get lost in a half dozen different traps of various kinds
playing scientist/coach on yourself. No one is that objective.

I think the idea is daft. Get a coach, get a Powertap, get results.

Just FYI, Kurt Kinetics is coming out with a computer that does watts for their trainers for about $100 in the fall. Just sayin...

Also a thanks to you late. Part of the reason I posted was to get a reality check on the idea.
