Training for a 100 miles "TWICE"
Ok I want to do the waves to wine MS ride. It is for charity plus I think it will be a beautiful ride. Right now I am able to do 20 miles at a sustained speed of about 16.8 to 7.4 mph. I am not killing myself when it is flat, but getting a good workout. Any suggestions on getting my milage up and or incoporating climbs etc? I know there is at least two climbs in the MS route. It is 100 miles the first day and 75 the next. I could go shorter but I really want to challenge myself. :D
Also any suggestions on how to bribe more saddle time out of a wife. ;) With three kids it is a challenge for sure. |
I know the feeling on the saddle time issue. I can get away with 25-30 mile rides during the week, but it's tough to get in a longer ride on the weekend. If I leave real early on Saturday I can squeeze in a 3 hour ride without the wife getting too bent. I just have 1 three year old, but my wife thinks that the weekend should be reserved for family time. You really don't need to do but 1 long ride a week anyway. The best way to get your mileage up is to increase the distance gradually each week. You can just add 5 miles to your long ride each week.

One hint I have seen around for a long time is to add 5% to 10% to your weekly mileage each week. Another is to train on 3 days a week with a rest day after each ride (which can not always be done). Yet more is to do long rides on weekends to get your body used to being in the saddle for a long time. Short, fast rides on Tuesday and Thursday to build strength and a longer ride on the weekend building up to 20-40-60 miles. Or Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. In most places I have lived when I start going beyond 10-20 miles I start running into hills. The MS people can give advise.

Yup it is just hard to drag my bum out of bed at 7 or even 8 on the weekends. All I want to do is sleep in. :D
I am getting 3 days a week at least, sometimes 5. Many times it is only for an our or so so I ride hard for 15 to 20 miles. I just don't want to kill myself stretching to 100. Worst case, I will drop it back to 10 mph and enjoy the scenery. At that pace I know I can go all day.. |
Start commutting by bike. If you work on the Penisula, you can ride one way and bike-train the other. Caltrains Sunnyvale stations is pretty nice. That way it will not trake as much family time and you can lower you gas bill. This will make it easy when talking to the wife.

Trade riding time for something else your wife wants. Like watching the kids while she does something for herself.
If you really want to train you'll find a way to get up in the morning. Bicycling magazine has a good century training plan. The key to doing two hard days in a row is to not go too hard on the first day, and to get a lot of calories in during and after the first day's ride. On the first day you're not only eating for that ride you're eating for tomorrow too. |
