Mountain biking n cadance

I had being into xc mountain biking for about 2 years.I got a friend who is a road biker and he said that
cradance is important in order to be a batter cyclist.Does this apply to xc mountain biking too?And what is the optimum cadance?
I try to maintain a cadance of 90 rev per min. when i cycle alone on tarmac. But I can't maintain a 90rpm cadance when doing off road or cycling with friends. Can anyone please give me some training tips.
Is this cadance thing important or just talk?
