stubborn knee pain
Im really comfortable in my saddle right now (moved it foward a bit) and I do not want to move it....however my right knee doesnt seem to like it.
Im watching my knee as I spin and nothing is being hyper extended...im coming right down on the pedal...I feel powerful...everything LOOKS right. Can my knee just be in pain right now? Generally if I were to just keep my saddle where it is will my knee adjust or will it destroy itself? |

Is there a certain part of your knee that's in pain?
And exactly how far forward did you move your seat? Sometimes when you move your seat forward you need to move it up a tiny amount (and vice versa.) But most of the time when I have a problem with just one knee, it's cleat position rather than saddle position. |

Its around the top part of the knee cap...sometimes the left side of it. its also effecting my calf sometimes as well. It feels like it overstretched or something...but yet there is nothing extreme about my riding position that i can see.
What if the pain is unrelated to cycling? I dont wanna ruin my position for nothing... Im wearing brace as we speak actually. |
Do you walk toed in?

Have you had a professional bike fit? Knee pain is nothing to mess around with - you can get a repetitive motion injury leading to permanent damage... ask me how i know :(

If it's the left side of your right knee, try moving your right cleat for less toe-in on your right shoe. Maybe shift it back toward the heel a few mm while you're at it.
I had a mirror image of your prob -- right side of my left knee -- and that worked for me. Also note, if you moved your seat fwd, you might want to raise it a couple mm to compensate for the shortened distance between your hips and the pedals. The problem for me wasn't at the bottom of the stroke, it was at the top -- left knee flaring outward and too much toe-in on left foot. |
Less toe in....meaning adjusting my cleat outward so that foot and leg is closer to the crank...hopefully preventing a knee flare out at the top of the stroke correct? Ill also consider moving it back.
What can pain at the muscle/knee around the top of the knee indicate? The discomfort seems to jump around...ugh... It is feelin stronger though today. Like...the pain is never sharp...its always dull and annoying...and while cycling its not like ill feel a pain at a specific point in my stroke...ill actually notice it less while cycling except for a little weakness, and then later itll get worse. |

By less toe in, i suggest pivoting the cleat so that the toe of your shoe points straight ahead, or even a few mm outward. I have a bunch of links somewhere about all this. I'll try to dig them up and post here. The pain I had -- also dull, but annoying and worrysome -- dogged me for the better part of this past spring, until I got my shoes and seat set up right. |
These links were helpful when I had the problem. You'll note a common theme in these links is leg length discrepancy.

Check sheldon brown's site for fit as well. There may be some good stuff there.
