Weird weight gain...

It seems that I gained some weight. I'm 5'8", and I was 152 (or 154) pounds around August. I'm up to 159.8 pounds as of today. I can see the changes, considering that I see and feel small deposit of fat (I think) around my stomach area when I sit down. It's not a lot, but it's definitely bothering me.

However, I'm also noticing some weird things:
  • My waist size went down even further. I was a 30" waist around then, and now these 31" pants that fit me a little tight then are really loose now, and I have some slack with my 30" shorts.
  • My performance on the bike is better, and so is my climbing. My heart rate recovers really quickly; for example, if I stop at a red light with a HR of 170 bpm, it will come down to around 125 in a matter of seconds (maybe 10 or so, probably less). I can feel it too because the "thump" of my heart beating gets louder as it goes slower.
  • This week, I ate a little more sweets than usual. I had a cookie yesterday with my dinner and a cookie for lunch earlier in the week. I might also be eating more, but I'm not sure about that. However, I feel much better. I don't crash at work, and I wake up with a LOT more energy than before.

Has anyone gone through this before? I'm going to start tracking my calories again to make sure that I keep tabs on that, but considering that my waist size has gone down, I'm unsure of whether this is body fat gain or not.

Either way, I might have to curb whole fat milk and go cold turkey on french fries again. Damn.

If you feel better, stronger, etc...it could just be natural. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat.

That said, the low 150s does sound more like an athlete's weight for 5'8" than 159.8 does - I'd cut out the french fries anyway

Stop obsessing. Even doing the right things your weight will fluctuate.

I started to notice fat around my middle more when I actually was in better shape. Maybe looser skin, maybe just more contrast between my firm core and what's on top of it. Sounds like you are fitter, and the weight due to muscle mass. I wouldn't sweat it.

Actually, I'm going to stop worrying about it. My performance on the bike is better than ever, recovery is a LOT faster and I feel a ton better.

Though I must say; I had to do photography at a swim meet the other day; my body figure is close, but it's not there.
