Yes, the irony had occurred to me

But, though from the outside a pack of riders may appear to be a cohesive group, often the only thing they have in common is that they ride bicycles.

And for the particular pack of riders in your pic, it is also their job.

Ive made the choice to be Drug free. I dont drink, smoke, do drugs. Almost all my closest friends have been Edge for a long time, but i wont claim it. I think its a little trendy to claim edge, and i dont need to be a part of a fan club to be drug free. I got props to everyone whose edge though, its a wonderful lifestyle being drug free.

i guess i'm a tool. this thread was not meant for a bunch of jackass comments about how you think it's not cool to be "edge." i just wanted to see who else in the bike community was similar to me in the sense of this life decision. i'm twenty. i didnt claim to be in a group. i claimed because the name stright edge fit. i've never had the desire to do anything harmful to my body. i've seen drugs and alcohol ruin lives. the comment about moderation is correct. i dont care what you do. i just wanted to connect with other bike nerds. to each his own.

fun fact. the guy that started straight edge never claimed. he just lives the lifestyle.

I remember the beginning of this movement or idea, in fact I remember when bands like Minor Threat declared themselves SE on stage. I may have tried it for a bit but it wasn't for me, I do like a beer or three. I also didn't need that to be a reason to fight, I just went to hardcore shows and we ended up fighting drinks or no drinks.

On the other hand, I don't get why people would talk down to you for being SE, in fact noone would speak this way to someone who simply claims to live a healthy lifestyle. People forget that at younger ages it's comforting to surround yourself with like-minded people and at times call yourself SE or whatever you like.

I am older now, I still listen to Minor Threat and new punk also, I am a bike nerd, and a beer lover I just don't need any group or any affiliations.

In time, when you are still living your healthy lifestyle you will forget it was SE, and it just becomes healthy.

By the way, I saw an interesting show the other day on the SE movement back in my day and later when I was out of the Hardcore scene:
http://ngcblog.nationalgeographic.co...utside_in.html

And there is also this show:
http://ngccommunity.nationalgeograph...ernatives.html

Stay clean and safe

I am not Straight Edge, but before we all jump on "the last train to Smugville," let's maybe think about how hard it might be for someone to give this all up, and to think maybe that's why they would want a peer support group. If you think of everything from prescription meds to marijuana to caffeine as a drug, which it is, and consider how ubiquitous use of these drugs is, and how, judging just from how threads about veganism or straight edge generally go on a public forum like this, which is to say a few people who are into it, and many more people who just chime in to antagonize them, I think it's obvious why folks might band together as a "scene."

What's funny to me is that Mormons feel about the same way about drugs including caffeine, and yet the same people who diss SE wouldn't think of hating on Mormons. Plus, Mormons believe a whole lot of dumb BS that is quite obviously not true, SE kids generally don't, plus they have better music and dress better than Mormons. Think about it.

Seriously, I am neither Vegan nor SE, but once every two months someone makes a "Who Is SE/Vegan" -thread, and 80% of the posts are dudes saying hilarious junk like "I luv animals cuz they taste good" and "I'm drunk right now so screw you!" It gets old. Getting flamed for only wanting to put healthy things in your body, and having a support network of like-minded folks, is totally ridiculous.

Some edge people are pretentious little hypocrites, and many aren't. Like I said, there are a lot of idiot thugs representing edge, but there a lot of good people into straight edge. I'm not the type to "advertise" I'm edge, as if anyone gives a ****, or I need to belong to something. The OP asked if anyone was, and technically I am. I'm into the hardcore punk music too, where it got its roots.

As for not having fun - if you need substances to have fun, you're the ****ing bore. I've had more fun with my edge friends than I've ever had at house parties, college parties, etc.

Its really a positive movement, and seeing people be so opposed to it boggles my mind.

To each his own.

I am not straight edge, although I think I share a few ideologies with those who identify this way. I don't have any problem with this or any way of life that does not force themselves upon others. Unfortunately, I've heard of straight edgers who were quite militant in their beliefs (specific occasions in my neighborhood), and while I know not all straight edgers are like that, I can't help but form a subconscious bias of some sort.

I haven't met any straight edgers recently, but I'd be very happy to meet some folks who identify with this lifestyle to wipe my presumptuous slate clean.

If you'll notice, the wording of my post implies that i also went through the search for identity bs just like everyone else.

let's maybe think about how hard it might be for someone to give this all up, and to think maybe that's why they would want a peer support group.
ok, but it doesn't sound like it was that hard for the OP, since he wrote:

I hardly think that was the tone of my post.

It gets old. Getting flamed...
Your think THAT was a flame??? I am beginning to wonder if you are replying to my post or some other post and just quoted mine because you couldn't find the one you wanted to reply to.

Nafin, more than likely he is referring to people in general. this forum is the least of my worries. i've lost friends because they wouldnt get off my case about being "edge." it sucks because im not ragging on anyone for there choices in life. some people just have some growing up to do.

i'm being very vague and not implying anything about anybody on this board.

yes, like you. You're not edge, you just don't do drugs, smoke or drink. If I was to follow you around for a day, I'd bet my life that you and any other edger/edgy/edgist put some sort of poison in their body. I'm not saying that its a cool ideal to aim for, but to err is human. There is always something that we do that is not 100% good for us. Be healthy, be drug free it's a great lifestyle, but to be edge is to be a prick by definition.

While I congratulate anyone who lives a clean lifestyle some drugs are good for you in moderation, and in some cases you are better off for have taken them.

It is interesting that living a clean lifestyle has got a trendy name with it and rock bands that trumpet the cause. It is almost rebellious counter-culture compared to the sex, drugs and rock n' roll mantra that usually goes along with youth and music.

It is also interesting to see how naming something brings it into the public and creates awareness of issues and trends. At one time it was how people should live to be healthy and it was not really an issue, now there is a proper noun attributed to it "Straight Edge", where in some circles it is going to church and living a clean lifestyle is prescribed by Jesus, Mohamed or whoever, depending on your religion.

So from a sociological perspective it is interesting how a lifestyle choice can be trendy depending on the name you give it and how it is promoted.

oh man, you're right! i'm such a prick....
you have no idea who i am. who are you to judge me? it's not my place to judge you. i live my life, and try to be as perfect as possible. i'm human, i do make mistakes. so i guess i shouldnt claim now because you say that i'm not. this is the exact kind of immaturity i was hoping wouldnt happen. anything can be marked as poison. it depends on the person. you're being a child and need to grow up.

please fire back by saying how childish it is to identify myself or affiliate myself with a group of mostly good people that live their lives the best way they know how.

people like yourself are the reason that their are militant thugs associated with straight edge.

On a similar note, anything is bad for you if you ingest too much of it. It could be argued that whether something is poisonous or not depends on the quantity as much as on the substance. Drink too much water it will kill you.

Everyone else has already bashed this ridiculous 'scene' sufficiently, so I won't add to it.

I don't seem to have the addict gene, so I feel free to experiment without fear of ruining my life. Have fun living a completely boring/narrow life.

I've always thought straight edge would fit well with a Mormon who wanted to be edgy. It's a lot cooler to tell your friends that you're not going out drinking because that's how "core" you are instead of telling them that a prophet told you not to drink because he got a direct revelation from god.

And before you get all pissy, I've walked a lot more than a mile in your shoes.
