Different people have different max heart rates. So there is no way that I can tell you just from your age.
Also, what are your goals?
If you just want to be a bit fitter and you do not like hammering along and feeling like you are near death, then you would want one heart rate. If you LIKE hammering until you go hypoxic, well then you would want another number.

It depends on the OP's max heart rate. I have a friend who has a max of 220 so 172 is cruising for her.

Yeah, mine's 203. According to the tables, my 41 year-old heart should explode.

im 29 6'3 203lb i have been doing spinning for about 4mo and can't get my hr past 170 during spin classes at my gym (schwinn spin bike). i ride a lemond revmaster pro at home in my garage and i have a hard time getting my hr over 160. bottom line has to do with atmosphere/mindset/motivation... and also real biking involves a lot more muscle groups (more upper body and core IMO). i have gotten past 180's on my real bikes.

I did that today (easily) after being off the bike for 3 months. I don't know if that means I'm in shape or out of shape. The bike simulation thing at the gym said I wasn't putting down very much power though

Having a high heart rate is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing.
For me I can be ready to explode and barely hit the 160s. I would not call me unfit either.

Your max heart rate is genetically determined, it is not determined by your age. Your best bet is to do a max heart rate test where you push yourself until you can't go any higher. It's easier to do on a stationary (spin) bike than out on the road. You can do a search on the internet for more information.

Yeah, that was my point, but only implied. I should really write more complete posts. I agree with Cbad. If you're healthy, you might as well find your true personal max HR. Get on a stationary bike or a treadmill and go until you can't go any more.

I use a recording HR monitor that I download into my computer. My spin class is a series of short intervals. I'll go from 70% MHR in the rest phases to as high as 90% during the work phase, more usually 85%. However, the work phases are so short that reaching 90% implies anaerobic effort. Also the 1 hr length of most spin classes is barely enough to fully warm up before it's over. Also, you're not outside, so your HR is going to run a little lower due to lower arousal. Also, most spin classes are too dark to see your HRM anyway.
So don't worry about it! Just go by your breathing and do whatever it takes to give you a good workout. Afterwards, go into the weight room and beat yourself up good. You'll be nicely warmed up.
And don't try getting your MRH on a bike in the gym. It won't fit right. You'll do better on your own bike on a long hill after about an hour warm up and some short intervals. Or use your trainer if you can't get outside. After a warm up, start fairly hard and gradually build to a 45 second max effort sprint over a period of 10 minutes. Do it when well rested after a couple of days off.

Just posted a thread similar to this...
I recently just got a HRM and last Saturday did a 3 hour ride with about 180bph average... apparently MHR and training zones are very dependent on the individual.
