Is Soy products healthy?

http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/soy.htm

I have been reading some articles that have me scared about soy products. I just recently switched from skin milk to soymilk for the increase protein in my oatmeal and protein shakes.

Should I go back to cow's milk?

The short answer to your question is NO. Modern, western soy foods are not healthy.

Here's more reading if you care to, http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html

Now the answer is a little more complicated than a straight out NO. Traditional fermented asian soy foods such as Miso, Tempeh, Nato and such are fine in moderation. Its the fermentation that makes soy digestable and I have some Hatcho Miso on a regular basis which I feel helps me to detox.

Western soy is a big promoter of estrogen in your body.. This is not a good thing for overall health.. I have read how soy is used in many food products and eating additional soy is not beneficial for health..

EatMyA** 04-17-09 07:03 PM

as opposed to starving yes

as opposed to beans hell no.

I am lactose intolerant and lactose free milk still caused me issues from time to time. Not to mention the chemical process they put it through. Lactaid pills were a hit and miss.
So, the next step was soy milk. After reading up on it, potential side effects, and how it is produced I was not exactly thrilled. After tasting it I was even less excited.
Once I found rice milk I was quite happy.

Dubbayoo 04-17-09 09:11 PM

Unless you're vegetarian I've never seen the utility of soy.

DataJunkie 04-17-09 09:57 PM

I am vegetarian and I do not see the point. Though tofu can be useful in a few recipes here and there. All in all I eat very little soy.

Carbonfiberboy 04-18-09 12:26 PM

The long answer is no, you don't need to go back to cow's milk. While soy does contain isoflavones known as phyto-estrogens, there is no evidence that these compounds are harmful when consumed in normal soy or soy protein isolate. In fact, they may be beneficial for men:
http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/...ct/137/10/2258

Most of the real controversy surrounding soy isoflavones is whether or not these phyto-estrogens will bond with estrogen receptors in women and increase the risk of breast or ovarian cancer. In the studies I've read, consumption of soy may actually protect against these cancers by bonding to the estrogen receptors and thus preventing the bonding of true human estrogen, which does have a bad effect:
http://www.news-medical.net/?id=3102

Further, soy protein isolate is an ingredient in Hammer Nutrition endurance fuels. These fuels have been used for years by triathletes, and RAAM and other long distance cyclists. I think if you can train for and ride RAAM using these fuels, there's nothing to fear about becoming girlie-men or manly-grrls or whatever if you use them.

The only real downside to soy is that some people tolerate it poorly digestively. For some people it's just the farts, while others get real digestive upsets. So if you're using it now successfully, no reason not to, whether you're a vegetarian or not. I suppose real meat eaters can supplement the carbos in their bottles with cow's blood to get the proper carb/protein ratio for long distance riding. But for the rest of us, soy may work fine.

Digital Gina 04-25-09 10:53 AM

I use it to get more estrogen, for female i've heard it gives you bigger breast.

If you want to make yourself sterile, want to feel like crap, if your a dude and want boobs, if your a woman that wants bigger boobs growing out your forehead drink soy.
Look at all the food products at the market. How much of the crap sold won't kill you? Look into the FDA and their bogus food pyramid nonsense. check out the new bill that is supposed make growing your own food and having gardens illegal. And Now there is a well planned out water shortage occuring worldwide in a planet thats flooded with water that we supposedly can't drink. Look into non governmental agencies/think tanks that have population 'control' departments and what there purpose is. Read into what GMO foods really do to people/animals and check out Monsanto who makes this crap and can influence and create laws and are basically untouchable. All this equates to the stuff we eat and call food is scientifically designed crap which is meant to do only 1 thing, kill.

If you research the topics above It makes more sense why soy is put into every product masked as food on the shelves of the U.S. markets. Look at the decrease into the sterility of the male population, how the population has been steadily decreasing (which is why immagrants were brought into this countrywhich also creates the illusion of overpopulation to locals), how there are less males on the planet. If you pump a dude full of BPA and crap that mimics estrogen (and i don't care what amount of of estrogen mimicing foods/toxins a person injest) it will have an effect on them. Oh yea, if you read the argument by experts/scientist of "only a little bit of _____ (<--- Insert product) won't kill you..........It will kill you.

If you go back to drinking milk try some goats milk. It is more easily digestable for humans. Plus there might be less puss and blood in it then cows menstration milk. Or you can make some milks out of almonds, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts.

Huh? Soy is a bean. Personally I consider it to be a pretty healthy food. I eat tofu now and then and have edamame with my beer. My wife and daughter will eat natto (fermented soybeans) pretty regularly, but my son and I don't care for it.

xfimpg 04-26-09 11:09 AM

I have an intolerance to soy and milk, bloats me to no end.
My alternative has been almond or rice milk. I prefer almond milk as it's much lower in calories.

cyclezen 04-26-09 11:57 PM

along with the stuff noted above, take a quick peek at this...
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4810513.html
go to the section 'BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION', read that

note: "proteolytic inhibiting substances are present in the raw soybeans", that referring to protease and the need to break down proteins into a useable form...
also note:"because proteolytic inhibiting substances are present in the raw soybeans. The presence of these inhibiting substances requires that the raw soybeans be cooked or heated in order to destroy the harmful urease enzymes and trypsin inhibitors. These substances in the raw soybeans have a ******ing effect upon the growth of livestock and they can actually prevent proper utilization of the protein supplementation provided by the soybean feed material. Care must be taken in the heating process, however, because even though the heating is required to destroy the trypsin inhibitors, improper cooking will result in damage to the protein product itself."

as common a processing method is:
"In order to achieve a soybean feed product which is free of the inhibiting substances, most soybeans are now processed by a solvent-extraction method to produce what is commonly known as soybean meal."
That referring to Hydrolysis, which is really a term for processing the soybean in Hydrochloric acid...
from which
Expect higher levels of MSG since the resultant Glutamic acid quickly reacts down to the salt, MSG.

so when we talk "Processed Foods", were you thinking Big Macs or GardenBurgers? It don't get more processed than *Soy*.
not what you'd call "pick it off the vine, or from the ground, and put it in your mouth" fresh food.
Personally the whole 'soy' thing (to me) is just another fine example of manipulation by agri-biz in cahoots with gov. collusion to allow questionable stuff to be sold to us.
Ranks up there with the whole rapeseed bull**** - CANOLA (Canada Oil - because they didn't want to call it rapeseed oil, rapeseed oil in the presence of the acid in your stomach will become plasticized material). And maybe worse, deadly chemicals in your drinking water which before Floridation, the metals processing industry didn't know how to dispose off safely...
at the current time "organic" offers a better quality cow's milk (til the gov and agri-biz finish screwin that up also...) and certainly rice milk and other extracts are good choices.
yogurts of quality offer a higher protein level also...

As much as I hate multi-national corporations too, I also have to say that I haven't heard this much conspiracy crap since I watched that last Alex Jones video...

I'm a vegetarian and have been consuming soy products for the past few years. I don't have man-boobs, nor do I feel like crap. In fact, I feel healthier than when I did not consume meat and cow's milk.

Not all GMO foods are evil. If you want to spend the rest of your life growing your own crops, fine, but I embrace technology and the potential benefits it can produce for humankind. We just have to take the profit motive out of it.

chingon77 05-01-09 01:49 AM

Alex jones is crap for the mind if you don't have one. If you do he's still crap. Conspiracy is conspiracy and its all around. Crack open a history book and its just one conspiracy after another. Its not hard to see. Its best if one does there own individual research then watch videos of so called truth seekers which tend to be traps for the rabbits that fall into the holes.

I've done the vegan and the raw vegan thing. Sure i felt better. At first. Then after the initial hi of not feeling like crap all the time you start to feel like crap all the time again. Sure I was eating correctly and didn't over do anything. Your most advanced civilizations in history controlled the diet of its slaves to keep the strong enough to work and week enough to rebel. Turns out vegetarianism does the trick. Now look how the diet of the people in the good old U.S.A is controlled. You go to the market and 99.9% of the food is crap, shoot its not even food. Then you go to the produce section and you have all the hybridized foods that barley taste like what they look like or are even called. (seedless fruits taste like crap.) The nutritional value of this stuff is garbage, probably depletes your body of nutrition. Eat a big shiny orange from the market and steal and orange from your neighbors tree and compare the 2 in taste. One taste like an orange and will give you energy. The other makes you thirsty, doesn't taste like it should and is dry inside instead of being juicy.
Man your lucky if you can buy water at a market without anything being added to it.
Then you add to this fast food and other packaged crap that we eat and you have one sick country full of malnourished people. We get fleeced for a couple of trillion dollars that we and our childrens children will be paying for for the rest of their lives from the government and the public does nothing becuase of our food induced comas keep us sedated, drunk, poisend and stupid. This is just one of many techniques used in how to bend people over and make them like it.

Sure technology can potentially help human kind. And i'm sure there are some that have proven so. The unfortunate reality is its the corporations and governements that fund the scientists to research technologies with the facade of having a noble cause of helping humanity. You end up with the money funders guiding the scientist into creating crap to fullfill certain agendas with technologies which end up hurting, enslaving, killing, e.t.c. humanity. This is the crap that out weighs the technology that can potentially help mankind. But scientists just like everone else has to collect a paycheck and lives in fear of loosing there jobs to speak out...... Well then again there's the 650 scientist which recently disassociated themselves from the United Nations because they stated they didn't want to play along with the global warming nonsense. Its seems like more and more are jumping off the global warming band wagon and exposing some of the myths the public has been given. i.e. polar caps melting, rising seas e.t.c.

Theres a whole lot of conspiracy crap going on these days.

Slim chance of that happening. This planet has been here for a long time, it has outlived everything its ever created, it can take care of itself. The big world con is making people believe and take blame for the corporations that create the toxic crap that hurts the environment. Its the corps. that need to be held accountable and the people need to get pissed off and stop eating their $hit. People need to realize that they themselves are not the ones that create the toxic products, they are just the end user who gets the blame for everything. And at the same time most of these products are very toxic for humans i.e. B.P.A, aluminum, flouride e.t.c. Then we slammed for thinking along these lines and are told its our responsibility to save the planet and start recycling which creates an obscene amount of pollution and environmental hazards. Which leads to the green agenda witch hunters, a new religion for the new age. Its a vicious circle/trap.

Here's an interesting article of Monsanto and the GMO's.

I doubt soy is all that great for us. but we won't really know because who is going to pay for research to prove it is? it is way too profitable to really be brought down. soy is everywhere because there is a lot of money to be made from it and not because it is good for us.
we just don't see research about products that have a lot of money behind them.
