Carb farts?

This is kinda embarrassing... at first, I noticed that during and after long rides in the saddle, I would get the toots. Big rippers. I considered my diet on these rides and concluded that Gatorade gave me gas. Then I went out on a long ride without a carb-laced drink and, lo, I STILL got the toots. So I'm thinking it's not so much the Gatorade as it is the carbohydrate in it. Perhaps it's got something to do with how I metabolize the carbs. Has anyone else experienced this?

What do you eat before the ride?

ions 06-01-04 10:06 PM

Heh, try a high protein diet and see what happens! :o

Nothing out of the ordinary. Before a big ride, I'll usually have raisin bran and.... oh wait a sec... you think the bran would do it?

John M 06-02-04 05:56 AM

Yes! I use to have the same problem when I ate a big bowl and rode with my bud  He just returned the favor

I do eat shreaded wheat and this does have that effect ~ 2 - 3 hrs later.

Are you using milk ?.. I have become lactose intolerant... All it takes is a little milk and stand back.... Can't drink the stuff anymore..

Stay in the front. :)

Do you feel stomach cramps and have a lot of gas? As someone else pointed out, the raisin bran might not do it but the milk sure would. I drink soymilk because I'm lactose intolerant. Normal dairy products don't affect me as much as milk would. One cup and you can power a windmill off me.

No cramps at all. I feel great during the ride. It's just that I get these wicked toots. Not a problem when I'm riding with the boys, but chicks don't like that. I mean, they like it when I'm at the front of the paceline cuz I'm big and can break wind big time, but...

I don't think I drink enough milk for that to be a problem. Like, I can be out all day on a century for example, where I drink lots of water and gatorade - no milk products at all - and blast up a storm. Maybe it's just the way I'm built...

Those are afterburners. Use them for an extra boost when launching into your sprint.

Nothing to do with carbohydrates. I've read that models who go on high-protein diets and low on carbohydrates fart more.

That is the WORST use of the phrase "breaking wind" at the front of a paceline that I have ever heard in my life...

Because you, like the rest of us, have an airy arse. Be proud of it! Make 'em pay if they're going to grab your wheel!

Raisins do it for me. I eat almost a cup on long rides and toot for hours.

Low-carb, high-protein diets can make your fart really really stinky... so it means supermodels have really bad farts?!?!? i think so!!!! :D

I can rip some fierce ones myself. I've been known to stir up a race pretty good. I haven't yet figured out how to use it to my advantage in the races yet...

Glad I'm not the only one. You could try Gas-X.
