Wheel suggestions for TT training

What wheels would the time trialists out here recommend for training?

On one hand, you want more aero + stiff + light wheels so you know your potential. On the other hand, you know you'll be putting in lots of mileage on mostly regular streets where there are potholes, etc. so don't want anything too delicate or pricey, i.e. rear discs wouldn't be ideal unless you've got a very, very full piggy bank set aside for hobbies.

I've been recommended Zipp 404 tubulars as a good compromise between being aero + stiff, but not too overboard. Some who are more on the cautious side have said to go with Aluminium rims only.

What do you guys suggest? any experiences to share?

Cheers

Yeah, was on a group training ride where a guy broke both his Zipps in a pothole. That was not fun for him. First time I ever saw a guy throw his bike. OTOH, you'll want to try your race wheels on the course or similar and in windy conditions.

Ouch. That's exactly why I'm not quite sold on using full carbon rims as training wheels. Although, you have a point about needing to train with deeper section wheels to become familiar with crosswinds. Perhaps just a plain old alu rim, or a deep section clincher that's relativelt cheaper then is the answer ...

Thanks for the feedback, and I continue to welcome any comments from others as well.

I use a pair of Zipp 404 clinchers - they're good for TT training, road racing (on decent roads), and crits.

They seem pretty bullet-proof to me.
