Farting a lot since started cycling

I've been cycling for 4 weeks now and in the process I've also changed my diet to high fibre. One thing I noticed is that I've been farting a lot -- like day in and day out -- probably 2-3 times an hour on average. At first the farts were mostly odorless but this week the farts are starting to smell. What's up with that? Does it have anything to do with the new food that I've been introduced to? (e.g., GU Gel, Accelerade mix drinks, whey proteins, Fibre one bars) Is this bad? Are those food just not right for me?

I would say it's probably the food. I've never heard of cycling giving someone gas. Your body is probably just getting used to all of the fiber.

Don't worry about it. It makes you go faster and keeps people off your wheel.

Once you've squeezed all the excess air out of your seat, the farting will subside.

Seriously, try Beano before you eat the wicker furniture.

I remember another thread on this topic.

I suspect that maybe you need to increase liquid intake. The liquid helps stuff move through the system which prevents it from slowing down and sitting there.... rotting. More natural fiber like cooked veges wouldn't go astray for the same reason. If you are eating more fibre, try throwing some grated fresh ginger in with it when you cook it. Helps to make it easier to digest.

If you have access to it, get some "triphala" which is an Indian herbal mixture available at Indian corner stores or maybe health food stores. It helps to clean your intestinal tract of "stuff" that has stopped moving. Drink a glass of water with it.

I suspect that the increased exercise combined with the higher rate of evaporation from the wind blowing by you has dehydrated you some. Also go to the toilet before riding, even if you don't think you need to.

It happens to me. I was recently reminded about this when I stopped riding for 3 months and recently resumed. I think alanf might be on to something since I feel it is related to liquid intake since I seem to get gassy even from other forms of excercise when I'm eating really well and excercising.
Also whey protein makes me gassy and sometimes constipated so if I take any protein suppliment I down some serious water. But that hasn't been 100% effective for me. I've read about many people with this same issue when taking whey.

It's not the cycling. Fiber makes me fart. Whey protein makes me fart a lot. Enjoy it :thumb:!

+1 on the fiber being the culprit, with possibly dehydration adding to the odor.

One other possibility is to add a bit of ghee to your diet. You can buy it at an Indian grocery store or make it easily. Don't get the vegetable type, make sure it is cow butter.

Put a pound of unsalted butter in an uncovered pot and turn the heat to low. 1/4 of the way around the dial on the low side and let it very gradually heat up. The oil will float to the top and water and milk solids will settle to the bottom. When the oil turns a golden yellow (and smells wonderful BTW) it is ready. Turn the heat off and get a clean bottle, maybe a Mason Jar if you have one and pour it in. The crusty stuff at the top is delicious BTW. The oil part is the ghee. Do not use the watery stuff at the bottom of the pot as it will cause the ghee to go bad quickly. Some people filter it through a cheesecloth but I think that is overkill.

This will not increase your body weight unless you have a serious weight problem and will not affect your bad cholesterol levels. However limit the intake of ghee to say a couple of teaspoons a day if you have a serious weight or cholesterol issue or are just a worryer.

I agree with the other posters (Dewey, Seedy and Turbo) about the whey protein. I suspect that it acts like a sponge in your system, soaking up the water and drying out the GI tact. Soy products can tend to be a bit dry. You can make the whey by the way (pun intended) but it's a bit of work, like making bread. Get a recipe on making soy milk or tofu. However like Carbonddale said Beano, (although a bit of a pain, 1 tablet per bite) will help.

The ghee acts in a similar way to the water. It softens and lubricates the GI tract and aids in the digestion, assimilation of nutrients and helps it slide through.

certain food types are not completely broken down by the digestive system.
when those food types pass through the colon then bateria begins to eat those remaining food particles. the bacteria outputs gases. your body ejects the gases as farts.

its generally healthy and normal. plus a little funny

its definately the food your eating. healthy food makes ya fart...? maybe...

I never heard of it, so I did some googling.
I found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGBI4IKL58g
Apparently, you need to be topless and have moobs to make ghee.

That's why mine doesn't turn out so well!

alanf 08-07-09 12:07 PM

The good news is that you are getting rid of it. If it stays in your belly it is very uncomfortable.

Another possibility is Sugar Alcohol. A lot of protein bars are loaded with it, and I believe it gives me gas+.
