The question is how much cheese.

I've seen large slabs with a 1/4 inch on them. That is a _lot_ of cheese.

Nutritionally, its great, if you cut back on the cheese and other heavy toppings.
Nutritionally it's great?
The crust is usually bleached white flour. Take away the cheese and the greasy mystery meat and there's nothing left.

Cheese in itself is not that unhealthy, just the greasy cheesefood that you normally get. White flour, marinara sauce, and some vegetables are somewhat healthy but definitely not 'health food'.

I used to get a whole-wheat pizza pie with just light cheese and marinara at this pizza chain called 'mangia' in austin, texas. very good and low fat.

The grease and cholesterol is all from the cheese and meat, if any.

I don't know about how bad white flour is. Never thought too much about it. There are worse things than white flour.

Right, that is why I consider it to be a junk food, because typically, pizza has tons of cheese on it. Around here there isn't any places that offer a 'healthy' version of pizza, so I'm stuck unless I make it myself.

It's just "empty calories", similar to sugar

If you are ever in DE/PA, stop by Big Cheese pizza and they will change your mind about pizza being junk food. It's _necessary_ food! I just finished off two slices of leftover chicken fajita pizza (sauce, cheese, red onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, and chicken) and d@mn is it good. And so is McDonalds until you finish your meal and then the pain sets in. I haven't been there in probably two years but I used to eat it a lot.

My take on Supersize Me: if you eat a lot of calories and don't do any exercise, of course you'll get fat. All the health issues he had are evidence that not all calories are created equal though.

Myself, I eat a lot of crap for lunch (Arby's curly fries, big plates of nachos, pizza to name a few) but I also eat healthy breakfasts and moderately healthy dinners. I figure it all balances out and as long as I'm healthy and at a good weight, I'm not going to worry about how processed meat is or what they are giving the cows. Come on, live a little people

[I really admire all of you super-health nuts. I don't know how you do it.]

the chees on pizza varies in helth value depending on how decent the cheese was beforehand. Most places use pretty crappy cheese. One place I used to go to in Indiana used fresh mozzarella (as in made that day), and my god it was awesome...super gooey, and not very greasy at all. It's the made to last forever crap that adds all the grease...that and your processed meats like pepperoni, salami, etc.

A hawaiian pizza made with fresh mozarella is so low in grease you prolly would consider it too dry....but man is it ever tasty

February will mark my two year anniversay since i quit fast food. I am never going back! I haven't entered a fast food restaurant since that time. If everyone did the same maybe i could afford my health insurance.

I'd love to do a counter-point for McD's. If they pay me for a month to eat at McD's every day, I'll take off work, ride my bike, lift weights, etc., I could end up with lower weight then when I started.

That's pretty cool.
It was obvious that Supersize Me was just a slanted slam, this year marks the death of the documentary.

He made the documentary in response of lawsuits by 2 women against mcdonalds that their food made them fat. The documentary is as absurd as the lawsuits, but it's also a lot of fun. I loved the movie and have followed Morgan's blog since I saw the movie. Anything that creates so much buzz about nutrition and fitness is a good thing IMO.

the documentary was a bit skewed, he wnated to say the food was bad, but he also changed his lifestyle around it to what teh "average american" does.

So what he was really saying is if you dont do jack squat, and just vegg in front of the TV, then dont eat nothing but McDs. That is pretty accurate, fat-laden food + inactivity = a case of the fatness. Given the most weight I ever lost was when I was pulling off over 250mi a week on my bike and what was I eating.....carl's Jr, #4 combo (western bacon double cheeseburger)....but i was working that off easily.

I can't remember that last time I had a MacD's now. If I want a treat of something grease I'd rather have a fish n chips covered in vinegar...drools.... it just seems more "real" to me. At uni now I've found a tasty italian style lunch place. They do pizza type things. Hot baugettes with tommato, mozerella, hot foccacia with ham and things. Shouldn't eat tooooo many

Damn, this has made me hungry.

I heard in the movie, one guy they showed had eaten quarter pounders there every day for years and looked normal/skinny. I can't believe people can be so uconcerned about what they put in their bodies..LOL

And it is cool to be able to burn off tons of calories and get away eating a double bacon cheeseburger or whole pizza once in awhile

Good site...thanks for the lead! She's definitely got some strong feelings (that I agree with) regarding the importance of individual responsibility. Although it's hard to take the word of a "competitive roller skater" too seriously. What's that? Like roller derby? or roller dancing? Ah well she probably thinks bikers are goofy too.
