I recently bought an indoor trainer for my road bike that came with its own rear skewer to use with the trainer. I am not the best at bike maintenance, so I am unsure how to proceed. On my back tire I removed the two bolts that let the rear tire come off the dropouts, but am unsure how to remove/install the new skewer. It doesnt look like there is a skewer on there at all, and do not know what to do next. I would also be interested in purchasing a separate tire for use on the trainer if that is an easier option. If I purchase a new tire, could someone give me a model name or something so I know what I need to use the trainer correctly? Thank for all your help!

When you say tire, you mean entire wheel? Sounds like it. This uses MTB for demonstration, but the same idea: https://bicycletutor.com/remove-install-wheels/

Continental makes a tire specifically for trainers so does Vittoria. I went with a cheap (< $10) easy to replace Forte tire (GT2 in 700x25) from Performance Bike for use on my trainer.

My Kurt Kinetic instruction manual states the following:
Please Note: Before attaching your bike to the trainer, make sure the bike tires are inflated to teh proper pressure. Mountain bkies can be used on the trainer, but keep in mind that the knobby tires cause additional noise and vibration. Dual compound tires are not recommended for use in the trainer. A wide slick tire will improve the friction between the tire and roller and is recommended for teh best trainer operation.

yes, i meant entire wheel. it looks like i will have to buy an entire new wheel, or convert my existing wheel to a quick release. do you have any suggestions for entire rear wheels that i should take a look at?

If it's just going to be for the trainer, the cheapest one you can get. lol

Your current wheel is attached with two nuts, the old-fashioned way, no quick release, so no skewer. Sounds perfect to me. Don't the nuts fit into the trainer jaws nicely? And the nuts will be hardened some, so no worry about marring them.

Any inexpensive, smooth tire will work fine. $15 should do it.

Using the Conti trainer tire. Works great for me. I tried my regular rear tire first, but it made more noise. Maybe because it's more compliant? The Conti one is firm, but doesn't slip much at all.
