Smoothie Recipes
Never really had a smoothie, till today. I tried a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe. Whats your favorite smoothie recipe? Do you substitute a smoothie for a meal? Is a smoothie more of a post-ride drink?
|
I have a bullet type blender and I put in a hand full of blue berries, 1/4-1/2 cup of organic yogurt, scoop of GNC 100% whey protein powder and top it off with Soy Milk. I drink this in the morning as my breakfast after my morning workout and I am surprised how I'm not hungry an hour later.

Scoop of whey protein, handful of mixed frozen berries, banana, cup of skim milk. Good stuff.

For long bike rides I'll drink a smoothies made from 1 scoop of whey powder, 1 cup of frozen strawberries, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter, and 1 cup of chocolate almond milk. I don't like bananas but it would make a good substitute for the strawberries.

Product link for Body Fortress, vanilla flavored. Make a Jamba Juice-style smoothie! For 24 ounces, use the following ingredients: 12 ounces of 100% juice - try pomegranate! 12 ounces of frozen fruit - try mango and strawberries! 2 ounces of pre-crushed ice A boost of your choice (like whey protein) |
These smoothies from Tropical Cafe Smoothies are about $6 for a 24 oz smoothie, kind of pricey.

I know this is an older thread (I dug it up myself) but I figured there's no harm in reviving it.
so far my favorite smoothie recipe is: 1 Tbsp flax seed 1 can triple cherry fruit cocktail 2 cups cherry pomegranate crystal light 1/2 a frozen banana 1 cup crushed ice everything goes in the blender and is blended till smooth. |
thinking about this for a minute, various combinations of bananas, blueberries, papaya, mango, strawberries, avocado, raw maca powder, cacao nibs, nut butter, ground chia seeds, flaxseed, dried barley grass, bee pollen, goji berries, honey and unsweetened soy, almond or coconut milk or fresh juice….and sometimes everything except the kitchen sink.
(and I probably forgot a few things :) ) |
1 c. orange juice
1 6 oz. fruit flavored yogurt 12 oz. frozen fruit. Freeze your own, mix and match. We make up about 50 twelve oz. bags as various fruits come into season. 1 t. vanilla Honey to taste, maybe 2 T. Makes 2 12 oz. glasses. Suitable for breakfast. |

Vanilla/Strawberry Smoothie
The salt essential to the flavor. Regular salt will also work 11 oz water 1 scoop Cytosport vanilla 100% whey 2 TBS Heavy Whipping Cream or full-fat Greek yogurt 2 ice cubes 1 frozen strawberry 1 tbs Psyllium husks 1 tbs Ground Flax Seed Meal ⅛ tsp potassium salt Blend |
8 oz cold water
4 oz lowfat or skim milk 4 oz almond milk 1/2 banana, frozen (I buy bananas when they cut the price because they are ripe and have limited shelf life, peel and cut into about 1" sections and freeze in a plastic ziplock bag, the bananas have enough oil content that they don't freeze super solid and the sections can easily be separated. 3-4 sections = 1/2 banana) 3-4 ice cubes 1 tsp dark roast instant coffee 1 heaping tbsp Hersey's Special Dark Cocoa 1 scoop unflavored whey protein (I prefer Bob's Red Mill brand) Blend until smooth. Makes a great quick breakfast. I also like: 8 oz cold water 4 oz almond milk 4 oz Greek yogurt (plain) 6-8 frozen strawberries 3-4 frozen banana sections dash of real vanilla or real almond extract squirt of honey (I prefer orange blossom honey, but plain old clover honey works fine) Blend until smooth. The Mounds Bar: 6 oz almond milk 6 oz coconut milk 3-4 ice cubes 1 heaping tbsp Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa 1 heaping tbsp whey protein (1/2 scoop) dash of real almond extract Blend until smooth and garnish with sweetened shredded coconut. |
What are the benefits of a juicer versus a smoothie?
|
I really dont get why people buy juicers. Blenders keep the fiber. Vitamix FTW.
So, yeah what are the benefits? |
I try making a date shake but in a smoothie way. The traditional date shake has medjool dates. I add bananas and maybe tangerine with some tangerine peel.
This is more of a smoothie for a smoothie flavor sake. No whey powders, etc. Dates and bananas really complement each other. The tangerine peel adds just enough pungent flavor to balance the sweetness of the dates and bananas. http://www.ohnuts.com/buy.cfm/bulk-d...FYU5Qgod6i8AlQ |
I've got a BlendTec which is comparable to Vitamix. Crazy expensive but well worth it. I blend this every AM:
large grip of raw kale 1tbs natural PB 1 banana 1 scoop whey protein cinnamon flax seed 1 multivitamin Vitamin D3 Calcium Magnesium ice water I can't start my day without it. My body craves it like crazy. If I have a hard ride I'll add a scoop of glutamine before and after my ride. |
These recipes are all missing about a quarter cup of sugar. Put that in instead of the whey protein (yuck) and calcium etc. Frozen peaches are good to grind up in it. Plain yogurt, milk, vanilla, ice, fruit, sugar, simple and good. Banana or strawberries are ok but sometimes the taste is better without bananas or the grit.
Personally I like it better to substitute ice cream for the ice and yogurt, but they tell me that doesn't count ... |
I have an Oster beehive blender, loud, but reliable.
This is my breakfast... 1/2 cup pomegranate juice 1/4 coconut milk (more or less) tblsp raw sunflower butter (there's also a few almonds in it) 1 scoop protein powder (50% casein/50% pea protein) 1 banana frozen blueberries, not a lot I'm a big fan of fresh juices. Get one of those cheap orange juicers, fresh OJ is great. I also make smoothies with other fruit. Mango/pineapple/coconut milk is a fave. |

Got it partly because celery lowers your blood pressure. I'm wondering what extra benefit do I get with that juice extraction machine? By the way, I happened to be outside in the parking lot and the repairman was overhauling one of their juicer machines. He had a pickup truck and was fixing it right there. I still remember my conversation with him. Bottom line is I am less interested in the juice bar process. I'll stick with my Oster high torque beehive blender. |
