I put in about 140kms a week in the spring/summer/fall. Nothing serious. Averaging 30kph.
I'm aiming for 1700 calories a day to trim up and my appetite is through the roof. I'm trying to eat a lot of simple but filling foods like celery, hard boiled egg, tomato etc. Of course as much water as I can stomach.
What are some safe appetite strategies to follow when ramping up the mileage and limiting calories?
Water seems to shut my stomach up for only a very short time.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, on his rise to bodybuilding fame had a motto: "Stay Hungry."
Sounds like you got it. It takes time for your metabolism to adjust to new ways. Your body likes to store calories as fat and that is its natural tendency. If it has been doing so for some time, it wants to keep doing that.
One thing you can try that plays into this is eating all day long; small "handful" meals instead of big eat sessions. Its more in keeping with the eons of development we had as hunter gatherers. We arent really all that far from it, still, you know.
And keep pounding the water.

When I need to loose some weight I do well eating spicy foods. I put salsa on everything possible. Low cal and really seems to curb my appetite. And try some other liquids like tea, coffee or sparkling water. Throw some ginger or cinnamon in your coffee or tea as they also can work as an appetite suppressant.
What is your current height and weight and where are you trying to get to?
Quick loss diets rarely work in the long run as what is really needed to permanently change your weight is a lifestyle change. The best thing to do is figure out what your calorie needs would be at your target weight and activity level and come up with a healthy "maintenance diet". It may take some time, but by the laws of equilibrium you will get there and when you do you will way more likely to stay there.

I'm 5'10" and 220. I have 28 inch quads. I'm a dense mesomorph. I never hit the gym, don't need to. I am aiming for 180 pounds. That's 40 pounds I don't have to accelerate around the velodrome. I have a pair of 34inch Lucky jeans that I fit into, 36 is what size my Swerv jeans are.
I have the legs and the muscle to burn an incredible amount of calories. I'd like to hit 180 by the time winter hits, say end of October. I want to be careful that I don't sacrifice too much lean muscle mass and eat well on or before/after rides.
I tried a cup of corn, cup of broccoli and 3 perogies tonight and it filled me up. That was 5 hours ago and I'm starving. It's 10pm now. I've had well over 2 litres of water today as well.
"Stay hungry". So true. My grandmother is a fit 84 year old who takes no meds and walks just fine despite having 2 hips and a knee done. She says your stomach should growl once a day.
Tea seems to work as a suppressant for me. I had 3 cups today of weak tea. It's short lived though. I'm ready to buy bulk celery and mustard to just have my stomach do something. I'm going through tuna like there is no tomorrow. My body is craving protein.
I feel good about everything but the hunger pangs seem to be more of a mental issue than something that an empty food like celery can solve.

Your appetite is high because your are starving. Not a good way to lose weight. Celery? It's like eating nothing, you're just going through the motions of eating while providing your body with nothing. This does more psychological harm than good.
Why do you want to lose weight in the first place? This is the most important factor of all.
You still need to eat good food to lose any weight, and it must be done gradually. You still need proper protein. Most people eat too much refined sugar and fat. Eats fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and lean meats and you'll be fine.
Are you addicted to sugar? The only way over that is cold turkey. No little bit here and there. Zero. Sugar is the number one drug in the world.
The truth is , one must eat to lose weight. Eat frequently, enough to keep you satisfied, but no more.

Well Dr. at the beginning of the season, (February) I was 220 but i've four inches on you at 6'2". I'm dealing with the hunger now that i'm around 205, but i'm still adding around 2000-2500 calories per day. My family doctor is also a sports therapist and pointed out early on that if i reduce my caloric intake too drastically I could end up sending my metabolism into a starvation mode.
Also there's nothing wrong with adding a late night snack or meal provided you're eating several mini meals through the day.
I've found that raisenated cherries/blueberries in the mid afternoon work wonders. Oh and even more water!
Like Garthr said, eat to lose weight, but my guideline is to stop when I'm not hungry, not when I'm full.
Enjoy,

Nope, you read it correctly. When you begin the act of eating, the mind expects food., calories. When you eat emptiness , like celery sticks ... in an attempt to "fool" your hunger, you don't fool the mind or body. The mind gets the message of "I'm eating, but I'm still hungry ... give me more". The hunger remains, and will remain until either the body gets some food, or it begins to shut down and conserve because it knows it's starving. That's why restricting diets never work. The key is to eat enough to be satisfied while still being able to function. This varies from person to person. That's why some are able to lose weight faster than others.
This is based on personal experiences ,not medical mumbo jumbo.

Except it's hormones that control all that, not your mind per se. Physiological is the correct word.

I added a "meal" today, up to 5 from from 4. I also added soda water to lunch (pellegrino). It's having a positive effect.
I'm not starving. I'm on a calorie reduced diet. I have a NET of 1500 calories a day. If I exercise 1200 calories off, I eat 1200 calories more. Simple. My BMR is only 2045 so it's not that drastic. The real trick is to just shut your stomach up until you adjust. I dropped 25 pounds last year gradually and figured I can go for the last push a bit more aggressively.
Garthr, my body is easily pacified by chewing. Not by food or calories. I'm a hardcore carnivore and I really crave chewy foods when hungry. So far adding a "meal" per dahut's advice helped a lot. I have to plan around my wife wanting a meal with me at 5:30 every day and this helped.
Still ain't easy.

One of my colleagues is a foodie and mentions many things, but one of his more stable habits is the decrease in simple carbs, ie, bread and other 'white' starch foods. When he eats carbs, they are complex carbs like whole wheat, oats and so on. He hammers a lot of veggies and lean meats and he apportions everything in quarters - 2 quarters vegetable/fruit foods, one quarter complex carbs and one quarter lean meat/protein per sitting.
Its from him that I first learned of 'caveman eating'. Picture a Cro-Magnon dude roaming around the post Ice-Age world, grubseating on whatever he could find or kill: hunting - gathering, in other words. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fish and lean animal protein - that is pretty much the stuff we're talking about.
Sadly, beer only came later.
So there is my friend, chowing down on his lettuce wraps, wheat toasts and nut rolls, all day long. And it works... hes trim and fit at 43 years old.

Yep.The "zone" balance works for me. I want more real fiber, hence the celery and increase in peas.
Been eating like a wealthy, indulgent, lazy caveman for too long.

Carb cycling has been working for me. I'm 5'11, 160 and getting 2400calories a day and I'm losing weight steady and healthy.

eat but eat smart. eat protein and eat snacks. I'm a big fan of chicken cutlets. Purdue makes a precooked chicken tenderloins that you can pop in the toaster oven whenever the mood strikes you!
