gatorade causing stomach upset

i've been noticing lately that drinking gatorade gives me a stomach ache and indigestion and gas...anyone have this problem? and what other drinks do you recommend? it's very warm these days and obviously just water isn't enough.....

DataJunkie 07-07-10 06:22 PM

I used to have that issue when I was having indigestion troubles. Now that it has calmed down through a variety of means I can drink it all day.
I still like either water with endurolytes or heed.

Gatorade usually feels heavy in my stomach when I ride and sometimes makes me ache, but thats it. I water it down now

Try a drink that isn't made with HFCS. HEED uses maltodextrin which I find to be easy on the stomach.

I usually use the powdered gatorade and put slightly less then the recommended dosage. That way it isn't as sticky. I have no problems. Just an idea...

I prefer plain water fortified with regular endurolyte consumption, or some cytomax (not super sweet like gatorade).

wabbit 07-08-10 05:43 AM

yeah, maybe watering it down....i don't care for the test of cytomax though, it's like bongwater with lemon dissolved in it! maybe i'll try something else.

I drink plain water, but when I do use a sport drink, it's HEED. It felt weird at first, since the flavor is subtle and the mouthfeel is very watery compared to full-strength Gatorade. But I found that preferable an hour or two into a ride.

I like Gatorade. Deelicious!

Ditto.

But only the Lemon Lime tho.

50/50 water/gatorade for me.

Straight up is too heavy and sticky.

Carbonfiberboy 07-27-10 04:08 PM

You could try the Gatorade G2. I also prefer HEED.

On rides where I wanted a sports dring I tended to go with one bottle of sports dring and one of water. I'd drink based on what I felt like, that usually meant abotu 50/50 in my stomach overall.

I concur.

You could also try eating bananas. They do wonders for testy stomachs.

What are we, wine tasting? HTFU and just drink it.

Oh...wait. That was my post. Spot on! 100% right! Couldn't agree more!

wabbit 07-28-10 05:02 PM

LOL...i should try HEED.

Agreed, I can't stand any of the other flavors except maybe orange, fruit punch, grape, strawberry-kiwi, light blue, and dark blue. Those are all pretty good.

A weak stomach is a sign of weakness, period. You are weak. WEAK!

Everyone is going to hate on this idea but as a vegan and a proponent of natural foods I try to find more natural solutions to these issues. This idea sounds weird but it works well.

Soak some Dates and Bananas or fruit of choice in water overnight or a few hours before your ride. The water left behind is tasty and full of carbs and electrolytes. It won't upset your stomach. Best part of it is you save the fruit after you soak it and it makes a great post-ride smoothie.

Either that or I use Vega Sport which continues to amaze me, but it's rather expensive.

One problem with gatorade is has way more sugar and sodium than is necessary. If I had to go with a more mainstream sports beverage I'd go with Clif Shot drink.

Thanks for this! I do use gatorade, but would much rather switch to something more natural myself. What's the ratio of water to dates and bananas?

wabbit 07-29-10 11:26 PM

why would i hate that? it does sound like a good idea. I agree, gatorade is probably not the best thing and I am all for finding something better, but i haven't seen vega sport around here.

Same here when I get the bottled stuff. If I chug an entire bottle straight up it makes my stomach turn over. Either 50/50 or the powdered stuff works fine.

The light blue (glacier freeze) is the best.
